Source-updated, or will they start from zero again? What d'ya think?

Yeah, I think I read somewhere that it will be a heavily updated Source Engine. Probably Source 2.0

Source undoubtedly. I doubt they want to create another engine, especially considering how long it took to get Source done.

Mmm, and if I remember, they pointed out Half Life 3 wouldn't be as much of a wait as Half Life 2 has, due to them using the same engine.

Actually, Half-Life 2 is Source Engine Build 7, so it'll probably be past build 14 by the time HL3 comes out. It's gone up a build number since HL2 came out. It began at build 6.

they have already told that they will use an updated source engine.

They already have features they have been working on for Source that didn't make the HL2 release deadline. Development is ongoing.

And with Source Valve is going to be able to make the Xen levels they wanted to make in HL but were unable to. :bigthumb:

Yep.

They'll push it much father though. Higher res textures, more polys, throw in some new gfx effects and improve the physics. No doubt.

Okay, here's what I said about it before..

I dodn't think having Source in the bag will make HL3 take less time. Who wants a sequel based in the exact same engine? Just look at UTech 3.0. UNF! Imagine Source 3.0 (you guys do know that HL2 is basically Source 2.0, right? Seeing as they called HL's half-Quake engine 'Source' too.)

HL3 will see a rewrite of Source. Mark my words. And I speculate it will involve Gordon developing a slight sense of a little known thing called 'Free Will' also.

ID software have only updated the Quake 3 engine for Doom. Epic use updated Unreal tech. it will be an updated source.

What? Are you serious? I thought they started from scratch. It doesn't look anything like Q3 technology.

Source is already at 7.0 We don't want to go back in time do we? =D
Yup, and was 6.0 upon release. By the way, does anyone know if Valve'll keep modifying Source and updating it to Half-Life 2, enabling new features? That'd be cool, like fixing AI or collision problems or better physics (I've noticed some objects falling a little slower than they would in real life).

do none of you remember the lawsuit? valve are required to produce a whole new engine for vivendi before they can part ways, so my guess would be that they would make a new engine and get vivendi out of their hair. sure, it'll be another 5 or so years, but it will most undoubtedly rule

Eh? That's news to me.

If they release it within a couple of years then source. If not, then something different.

Damn... Xen will look SOOOOO good in Source....

Although I hated the Xen levels in HL1.

actually valve are contractually obliged to only produce one more TITLE with vivendi, not engine.

no programer starts from scratch on a project if he doesnt have to.

programers love recycling older code when they can.

Everything Valve have said and done so far suggests a move towards regular releases of episodic content to at least tide over until the big releases. It makes sense economically and also in terms of the "burnout" they experienced in making HL2 for so long.

Therefore, I would suppose that even if it takes a while before we see a proper Half Life 3, there will be products on this engine to keep us happy in the meantime.

HL3's engine will probably be released over a year late and still use horrible hit box detection. :p;)
