OK, playing through HL2 and HL1 again, at the same time...yes yes, I'm weird.
Anyhoo, something struck me.
I think, quite firmly now actually, that the GMan is talking to Breen in HL1, in the room behind the glass. From what we've figured out he's saying, he's trying to get Breen to do what HE wants, and Breen doesn't want to.
However, I think he is trying to get breen to STOP the experiment, not to start it.
Why? Well, in HL2 he is seen talking to the resistance no fewer then two times. In the back of the train where the Vortigaunt switched off the TV as soon as you apeared, and later when he's talking to the French resistance leader. Now, right after the Vortigaunt turns off the TV, he says "We serve the same mystery." I think we all agree that means the G-Man.
Now, GMan is fairly obviously tied in with the resistance, we've kinda assumed that this was due to Gordon working for the resistance, but what if it was because he is a leader in the resistance. One the Combine knows nothing about?
I think the GMan is alot more powerful than we know, but may not be able to do as much as he wants to. I think he wanted Breen dead, but for some reason was not allowed to do it himself. He however, CAN manipulate events to help in his plans. Such as bringing Gordon to the future, and taking him out of harms way at the end of HL2.
So lets say that Breen found out about the Combine in HL1, before the game started. He wants to set up an invasion of Earth, then negotiate Earths surrender, hoping that it will give him some kind of power in return. However, he doesn't know exactly how to get ahold of the Combine, so he decides to get their attention by another means: At Xen. A world the Combine know about, and possibly even control. It's a borderworld between earth and the combine, and is reachable by our scientist.
Now, scientist have been visting Xen for some time, this is possibly how he learned about the combine. So he sets up the ressonance cascade, and the GMan learns what he is planning.
Who the GMan is exactly, I don't know. An Alien or human from the future I can't say. But he fails to convince Breen to stop his plans for the ressonance cascade, which in turn starts the portal storms.
Gordon manages to stop the portals from Xen in HL1. However, inbeknownst to Gordon, while he's busy trying to get out of Black Mesa and Xen, the Combine have attacked Earth. Breen got their attention all right. And he probably contacted the Combine telling them what targets to hit, such as the White House, Kremlin, etc. With no major world leaders left, Breen surrenders Earth and is set up as the new world leader.
This happens while Gordon is on Xen. Gordon kills Nalith(OK, how DO you spell that?) ending the portal storms. The combine that traveled to earth now have no way back, because the portals that were opening are closed. So, they setup base on Earth.
Gordon is now outside time listning to the GMan, and put somewhere until needed. Probably the next ten years are but a blink of an eye for Gordon.
The combine start the transformation of the Human race to meet their requirements, and eventually manage to make portals back to their space, leaving Breen in charge.
Fast forward ten years. There is still a small resistance that has managed to survive, but all major forms of resistance are gone. Breen is on the verge of something big, specifically, local transportation. Something the Combine have never managed to do. He will share this with the Combine to get another notch up the Cosmic level, possibly even to a level on par with the GMan. The GMan cannot allow this and sends Gordon to stop it.
Now, what about the "Contract" and "Offers" mentioned by Breen and the GMan.
The contract, I think was BS. Breen is VERY good at that. I'll call is a red herring.
As for the Offers, I think that can mean many things.
1: Other points in the future have changed, places where Gordon can be placed to further hinder the Combine. Or perhaps, other species requestion Gordons aid.
2: The combine are plea bargaining. The GMan probably wanted to end the combine rule of who knows how many worlds, but perhaps they are making an offer almost to good to refuse...something he normally wouldn't concider. I think this makes the most sence, because the Combine were in contact with Breen, and presumably trusted him to some extent after 10 years. And Breen was QUITE worried about Gordon. The Combine never saw Gordon, but they probably knew Gordon managed to End the Portal Storms on his own, and had now faced the entire force the Combine had on earth. Humans yes, but with combine technology. This likely had them wondering just WHAT gordon was. And probably had them a little nervous.
There are other things that "Offers" could refer to, but I figure those are the two most likely
So I think that the GMan is a good guy, I think he probably saved Alyx, and I also think Breen is still alive. If I'm anywhere NEAR correct, Breen is alot more important then we thought.
