HOLY **** New FFVII sequel?? ..... (no not AC)

I never caught on to the whole Final Fantasy thing..

Umm... wouldn't FFVII sequel be FFVIII? And don't they already have a FFX? I don't get it.

FF8 and FF7 are completely unrelated games. They're not sequels/prequels to eachother.

The only Final Fantasy game that has had a sequel thus far was FFX. FFX-2..

Me neither... I guess they must be pretty good...

But to be honest I cant afford to get addicted to ANOTHER game lol...

I have too much work to do. :(

When it says sequel, it means in the same vain as FFX-2.

So there's a "Final Fantasy Ten Two?" Why are they selling unrelated games under the same name?

Each game is set in every town and city in the game universe that is created. If they create a sequel to it, they would have no choice but to re-hash the old locations, which would be boring. So they create a completely new world, plot and characters for each game to make sure each is as good as they can be. Of course, that all changed with FFX-2, but that's only because of the abiguosity of FFX's ending. It's not hard to see how it can confuse someone who's not a fan of the series.

ehh...ff's are.....overated, i mean they detest the word of role playing by making you play a pre-made player that has practically no choices on how the character is going to play out in the game.....totally anti-roleplaying at its core.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it anti-roleplaying, I mean you still have very flexible experience and skill systems. True, you don't have any role over the character's personality, but you do have a say in how they play out in a battle. That's something. :) Also the way you wrote your post, you seem to be judging the FF games based on what you think an RPG is supposed to be like, which is a tad unfair don't you think?

I think people praise the FF games for the cinematic and immersive qualities of the world and story, over any of the real RPG characteristics they tend to have.

{EDIT]: If Vincent turns out to be the main character in this, I'll be so happy. Vincent was such a cool guy. :D

well, compare that very limited control to games like baldur's gate, or fallout, or even kotor have more choices for your character than any final fantasy's, i have to admit at one point i was a very big fan of the ff's then i just got through with running around the world map trying to trigure random battles and just stopped being serious with them at around ff x, then i discovered pc rpgs and just totally changed my rpg gaming persona.

ok, i'll admit that calling them anti rpg's was going a bit too far, but there are so many other games that truly express what is to "role-play", that just aren't affiliated with square-enix and final fantasy.

I have to admit, FFX, though I liked it the first time through, just wasn't that fun. Too much talking, too much running around between places, battles went on for ages...oh well, at least I still have 6, 7 and 8 to love and cherish. :D

I hate the whole Final Fantasy thing. It just keeps going and going and going. Someday they will be sorry.

These games made role-playing games what they are today. The origional Final Fantasy was called an RPG, so I don't see how they are anti-roleplaying if they helped invent the gaming genre....

no...dungeons and dragons made role-playing games what they are today, the only thing ff's are truly known for is the fact that they are just more constricted and toned down, not to mention linear, versions of the ultima series, and there are a ton of rpg's that came out around the time when ff's starting really kicking off that are totally different than any final fantasy, to say that ff's had a major influence on the role-playing genre is not totally wrong b/c thanks to final fantasy most every console rpg has to be a linear non-choosing, watch fmv after fmv "adventure", the type of role-playing games that i play do not rely on millions of dollars on production values but pure gameplay, i seriously suggest checking out the pc rpg gaming market sometime.

long story short, final fantasy's did not at all "invent" roleplaying games, dungeons and dragons did, please get some sense of history.

I never understood the appeal of FF games, I already give up whenever I encouter random-monster-in-a-field-who-attacks-me-for-no-particular-reason #12654 which is followed by some tedious lame battle system.

I'm talking about RPGs as a video game genre. Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior created the standard for what video game RPG's have been for a long time. I know all about D&D, but it didn't invent modern video game RPGs like the Final Fantasy series. Chrono Trigger followed this formula, and look at how many people still play it... People have different tastes, and many prefer this type of rpg for it's story elements and reward systems. Besides, I said they HELPED invent RPGs, not that they actually created them.

The whole appeal of final fantasy is the stories and the characters, it never promised to be some sort of huge role playing experience with vast character "creation" and a customizable story line (ie baldurs gate or elder scrolls) so I don't know why people criticize it for not being so. It's like criticizing Madden just because it doesn't have elements of FIFA in it, even though they're both sports games.

Like it or not though, I don't see why all of you are taking the time to express the fact that you dislike it. It's a thread about an announcement concerning a sequel to a game many of us do like, not a thread about whether or not you like it at all. We never said you have to like it, and if you don't there's no need to stir up more controversy. This site is filled with enough pointless arguements as it is.

If only it were a FF6 sequal.

Just imagine it :) Of course, i'd have to keep the same look. FF7 (while still great) was the start of the FF decline :'(

R.I.P

I still feel like the only person in the world who genuinly loved FF8, just as much as any of the other FF games. :|

Well, I think the series hit rock bottom with FF9. I'm hoping the FFXII can do justice to the series, considering that the man heading it also made FF Tactics.

I think they could've chosen a better FF game to make a sequel for. FFX was the last one I wanted to see get its story continued.

I think in order for a game to be an RPG it doesn't need choices and different paths to take. I think that with the definition we know today, an RPG requires you to develope your character(s) (ex: leveling up, skills etc.) and character(s) you take control of and bring through the game world.

If you define RPG as a game where you develop the character through choces and who you choose the character to be...the category would run quite thin.

If there is going to be another FFVII game..that'd be sweet. It's by far my favorite one. The characters are the best, the story is great, the fighting system/materia system is great too.

About the FF Series:

The reason Final Fantasy fans like the games so much is because of the familiar feel and kind of game we come to expect from the now named SquareEnix. Each game, you wonder what they did with the battle system, how you level up, what's going to be in the game world this time, what the coolest summons might be, what the plot is going to be like...and unfortunately...which character am I going to hate this time (every FF game...there's at least 1 character I either just don't like...or can't stand)?

There's a sort of tradition going on with FF games as well. They keep many of the same summons throughout the series (They've been adding and taking away various summons as they go along - FFX had mostly new summons and fewer because they were used differently), they keep the general feel of the game the same, the items you use, status effects, some monsters...basically some of the core details of the game apart from the battle system. Another thing I noticed is in every Squaresoft or SquarEnix game I've played...they always have a Cid somewhere...

FF Characters I hated/disliked:

Starting with FF6 because I haven't played the previous FF's enough to decide who I can't stand

FF6
-Umaro...he didn't do much besides hit hard...
-I forgot his name..but the guy that you could get specific abilities from various lands...he was a really primitive dumbass if you ask me.

FF7
-Cait Sith. Apart from the fact that he's actually a stuffed toy robot with a megaphone for a weapon...his limits are lame...and his character in the story isn't great.
-Yuffie sorta bugged me (especially the sidequest where she steals all your materia) but she's actually useful. Bonus points for that.

FF8
-Selphie. Seemed to bitch too much and was a wuss...I didn't use her.
-Wasn't a fan of Quistis either.

FF9
-Zidane. Monkey/Man that looks like a pansy girl. His weapons were cool, but he looked lame.
-Steiner also wore eye-liner (look at the case) and he had some lame moments
-Vivi was cool apart from some of the game when he was a pussy.
-Qina. An optional character. He was ok in battle and everything..but he didn't take any part in the story. If you pay attention...nobody responds in any way to what he says. Kinda seems like he's useless

FFX
-TIDUS was queer. I couldn't stand him being the main character. His voice was annoying and so was his character.
-Yuna. Why were her eyes different colors...and she always talked too damn soft. Other than that, she was just fine.

EDIT: I didn't like FF6 as much because I'm a fan of the materia system, the characters in FF7 are way cooler and badass, and FF7 is harder to master.

If you gave him the right relics, Umaro tore through most enemies. The other guy you're thinking of is Mog, and he was also my least favorite character.

FF7 for me is the greatest game ever, it even beats HL in terms of storyline an replaybility. It was the first RPG i played when i first got my PS1, before that i thought RPG's were for the nerdy guys who like to dress up as elves and orcs and throw stones at each other, this game changed the way i though about them and have followed the series since. FFX-2, its sort of a let down, i have it but cannot be bothered completing it, which is rare for me.

If FF7-2 comes out with the new engine and graphics then I cant wait.

How dare you!

Mog was boring!!! He was good for... hmm.. nothing! I'd have to say that Sabin was the most unique character. He had his own weapons and awesome abilities.

Yeah, the ending to 8 was great. It was definitely the best romance FF story.

People always go on about how thye haed Squall or the battle system, and saying it's just not a good game. Well I say bah to them!

The one thing i found good in 10, probably one of the best features, was learning Al Bhed, you know you have played it too much when you can talk it :)

Wurec Werdema 8 Zemr'd Pet, Wurec Werdema 9 Zem Mnud Dnyoidn, U Tetr'd Cegi Ud Ed Ecc, Pet Snerki Yw E Middurk. ;)

I dont realy like FF games.. i dotn think they are any fun, haveing to chose the stuff you do and haveing to wiat for you're next turn to attack. its boring.

omg if they remake ff7
OMFG
i love anything that's related to ff7
it still stands as the best in the series IMO

I sincerely hope this is true. I also sincerely hope it'll be for a console I own or will own (PS2, PC, or PS3).

You have to admit though, constantly having to draw spells out of enemies just to keep your characters stats all the way up was the most tedious and lamest stats system ever.

I agree, go materia!

Heheh I loved that, I spent hours in that lil training room, then Id show off all my draws to my friends :P. I loved most of the FFs and if this is true it will kick so much ass, I hated ffX though. One reason because there wasnt a world map, it felt so cheap there wasnt really any places to explore. Sadly FFXII doesnt have one either..from what Ive heard :(.
