Well, I saw this movie tonight after hearing about it for months over at AICN and I must say I was kinda let down. It was basically another derivative American "horror" (I use that term very lightly) movie. I mean, there was some hot chicks, and the premise isn't horrible, but at the same time it is clearly being advertised wrong. The violence was nothing I hadn't seen before and they cut away from things they really shouldn't have. If they're going to advertise a movie saying it's got the balls to show the stuff, then they need to show it and not pan away.

Wow, I just saw a commercial for it on TV and they were saying things like "scariest movie in a decade" and "not afraid to go for the jugular" but that's all such hype. Really, if movies like The Ring (the American remake, not the original Japanese film) scare you then this movie will probably scare you. If the violence in movies like Final Destination or any of the Jason movies is a bit much for you then this movie will be even worse for you.

I have a problem with this and almost any other American movie being listed as horror though, since it's neither terrifying, nor truly horrible. The audience I saw it with was all high school kids and dumb college kids who were cringing at it and laughing like the idiots they are. They were clearly the kids that are going to go and watch Final Destination 3 and think it's a good horror movie. They also wouldn;t have recognized the appearance of Takashi Miike (an excellent and very interesting Japanese director) in the film and the homage that was meant by it.

Man, that's quite a rant. Guess I'm just upset about being horribly misled. I'll stick with my Asian horror films. On a final note, this film was better than Cabin Fever, Eli Roth's previous film (and his directorial debut).

Also, as a kind of aside, I hate the way Quentin Tarantino's name has been plastered all over this movie just to get people into the theaters. It should've been sold on it's own merits. Tarantino did jack for this film, but now his name's above Eli Roth, who both wrote and directed the film. That just sickens me.

That movie looked crap, I plan to never see that pile of.. crap.

And Tarantino will put his name on anything and everything he can. He is way overrated in my opinion, even if he had jack to do with this film.

I would personally suggest not seeing it, but I would suggest seeing Suicide Club if you can.

Tarantino is incredibly overrated, I definitely agree with you there. I haven;t really enjoyed any of his films.

I also would suggest not to see it. The plot isn't very good or entertaining. It is more like kids go on trip, one goes missing, second goes missing 3rd gets kidnapped bam in the middle of evil place and he escapes and gets followed.

Was supposed to see it last night but...didn't. I thought it was going to be good. I always enjoy Tarantino, I loved Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs....etc

Are you trying to sound like an asshole?
I don't know who the hell Takashi Miike is, and I bet a ton of other people on here don't either. Are we idiots?
Seriously, that is one pretentious rant

I have a problem with audiences like the one I saw Hostel with because they seem dumb to me. Sure, it's a generalization, but they sure as hell didn;t make me think any differently. And yes, I'm a pretentious bastard because I can;t stand giggly high school girls and testosterone-fueled jocks while trying to watch a movie.

And Miike is worth checking out if you want to see some really f*cked up shit.

Tarantino didn;t make the film, he only put his name on it so it could sell better

Sure, most of it was the same-old-same-old Teen-Horror Movie crap, but it did have a few great scenes.

Not to defend that, cuz it did sound pretentious... but he does have sort of a point.

I wouldn't have guessed that Hostel would be another generic "scary" movie for dumbheads, though. I thought it was gonna try to be "over-the-edge" with goriness and torturing or something, like Saw, only worse (Didn't see Saw, though). Tarantino slapping his name on some random ear-cutting scene, and now you have a pile of crap.

I'm not a big fan of horror flicks, but that's for a reason. They are usually bad. :p

I personally think that the grudge was the most scariest movie I have seen in years. It's not about the violence or blood, it's about the atmosphere. These directors who make movies like Hostle, don't get that. They think: "MORE BLOOD = MORE SCARY!!!" Wrong. I hope the silent hill movie will be the best horror movie I will ever see, since the games were the best horror games I have ever played.

I hold a lot of hope for the Silent Hill movie, especially cause I loved the director's lasy movie. And I personally am with you on the fact that you don;t need blood for horror at all, you need tension and suspense. The film that came closest to scaring me was Alien, and that was all because of the atmosphere created. I haven;t seen The Grudge, but I'm not too keen on Sarah Michelle Gellar, and I have a problem watching American remakes of Japanese movies.

i thought the movie was funny. When that one 'surgeon' pulled out that garden tool and then clawed that guy in the chest and his pupils just lit up, i thought it was funny as hell.

The movie tried WAY too hard to be scary and sick, and ended up just being totally unbelevable and far from scary. Infact kakblackasstan looked like a beautiful i plan to visit one day.

I didn't think it was that bad but I don't think it's above average either. Only a couple scenes were a bit nasty.
The porno at the beginning was great though. haha.

Tarantino came up with a lot of ideas for the movie and the torture sequences, as well as helping Roth do a "Bullshit Pass" on the script, so yes, he is responsible for the final outcome of the film.

Great movie loved it a lot. It could be longer though like what happens after he kills that guy in the bathroom.

You know what was scary? Event Horizon. Need more like that.

Had gore.. but not much. It wasn't the gore that made it scary. Damn that one was good.

I was hoping Hostel was going to be like that, leaving me with apprehension, making me feel uneasy. Blah.

Hostel was bad. But uh, you wanna see a violent movie? Check this shit out, it's a clip from a french movie called irreversible, a guy gets his face caved in to look like a bowl full of scrambled eggs and ketchup by a fire extinguisher ALL IN ONE SHOT.
It's way ****ed up, here you go. http://www.muchosucko.com/video-irreversible.html
