Well, I saw this movie tonight after hearing about it for months over at AICN and I must say I was kinda let down. It was basically another derivative American "horror" (I use that term very lightly) movie. I mean, there was some hot chicks, and the premise isn't horrible, but at the same time it is clearly being advertised wrong. The violence was nothing I hadn't seen before and they cut away from things they really shouldn't have. If they're going to advertise a movie saying it's got the balls to show the stuff, then they need to show it and not pan away.
Wow, I just saw a commercial for it on TV and they were saying things like "scariest movie in a decade" and "not afraid to go for the jugular" but that's all such hype. Really, if movies like The Ring (the American remake, not the original Japanese film) scare you then this movie will probably scare you. If the violence in movies like Final Destination or any of the Jason movies is a bit much for you then this movie will be even worse for you.
I have a problem with this and almost any other American movie being listed as horror though, since it's neither terrifying, nor truly horrible. The audience I saw it with was all high school kids and dumb college kids who were cringing at it and laughing like the idiots they are. They were clearly the kids that are going to go and watch Final Destination 3 and think it's a good horror movie. They also wouldn;t have recognized the appearance of Takashi Miike (an excellent and very interesting Japanese director) in the film and the homage that was meant by it.
Man, that's quite a rant. Guess I'm just upset about being horribly misled. I'll stick with my Asian horror films. On a final note, this film was better than Cabin Fever, Eli Roth's previous film (and his directorial debut).
Also, as a kind of aside, I hate the way Quentin Tarantino's name has been plastered all over this movie just to get people into the theaters. It should've been sold on it's own merits. Tarantino did jack for this film, but now his name's above Eli Roth, who both wrote and directed the film. That just sickens me.
