Hostile-Planet WebSite Hacked?

No they weren't hacked; hackers do what they do to be proud of themselves and usually put a page up in place, or a little box on the site with their nick name so they can spread it around to all their "friends."

And you would know this HOW?

Me thinks that you're more than just a PC Nerd...

We've all seen hacked site before, and that is what usualy happens.
I wouldent rule out hackers just cuz they didn't leave a call-sign.

I emailed them about it, no response yet.

I would rule it out, what other purpose would there be unless it was a paid hit where you would want as little evidence as possible. But then you would probably leave someone elses tag for the website just to throw them off your trail even more.

I've said too much. *runs*

Well they were linked to in the recent steam news update. Maybe the bandwidth destroyed their host. After all, linking the entire Steam using community to a site is about the same as a huge ddos attack

QFT.

Remember that even Valve their host (which is also the one for HL2.net) went down some time ago?

hmm they have a term for it for slashdot news crashes...slashdotted.

so what this is, is.... steamed? :p

Hostile Planet got steamed.

The guys who run Hostile Planet are good people. If it wasn't for the lead coder, I'd not have little arrows and stuff underneath the units in my RTS mod.

ROFL
Ah yes, I forgot about that.

I just got an email back from them....

We were not hacked. We used 160gb in 12 hours and had to change hosts.

Valve is deceiving us! They are shutting down good mods by popularizing them!

wow
VALVe should really ask before doing that...

Also, it looks like their new host is up, but their still getting the full site back up and running.

I do agree that VALVe, like Slashdot should warn these people before they setup a DDOS. If I was the website guy for a mod I would know to cut off all of the larger downloads, possibly cut down the main page's graphics if it was too detailed, and possibly limit the images down to a medium sized showcase of the mod until the hits went down.

Well, it's not really the same as a DDOS but it has the same result.

now theres a "Coming Soon" flash thing.
anyone knows when theyre up again?

True, true.

Email someone at Valve for it, maybe they'll do it next time then.

they didnt leave the forum up?
or anyone got link to their forum?

No, their forum was shut down as well. I frequent there and was quite surprised to see it no longer existed.

Hopefully their new site will look good. The mod seems brilliant, but their layout was so-so. Wasn't much point to it either, as the team wanted to keep their mod below the radar. Valve kind of screwed that up, I guess.

GOD DAMMIT WHEN IS IT GONNA COME BACK UP AGAIN

Sorry for bumping this, but I just wanted to vent my anger. I miss the forums...

The "Coming Soon" page has been there for some time now. And like most things in life, that translates into "Not Coming Soon". :(

you have to admit though it is a nice "coming soon" page, what with the creepy music and stuff

When Valve pimped Dystopia in the Steam news update our web server was brought to it's knees. We refered to it as Steamdotting. I hope this name takes off :)
