I know someone who wants to leech HL2 (what a dork) and I would like to know something bout stuff so you cant play online with an illegal copy of the game. I just saw an artical about that you need only 1 key, does that mean that you can buy HL, leech HL2, and plkay it online with your HL key? Would be stupid. I hope they think of something because he just needs to buy the game, it's worth it.

Hmm that's an interesting point. I wonder if Valve will clear that up. I'm betting that it's probably a little more complicated to play Half-Life 2 online.

i thought there wasnt a cd key..but something else...

Half-Life 2 wont use Half-Life 1 CD keys. No company would do anything so stupid.

I think you only need one key to access Steam, but use respective games key to actually play a game of it... But I dont know.

Edit: Like you have a global SteamID, but you need to activate for instance HL2 using its cd key to play on the net with it, and then it recognises via SteamID you have a legit HL2 copy.

that sounds logical to me :)
Hope it also checks if that key is already in use, should be.

Warez will always stay, but it just means they can't play multiplayer.

multiplayer is the most interesting part for HL2 leechers, that is the main thing where they are buying the game for

If they buy it its not leeching, so then you couldn't call them leechers.

yes... IF they buy it, problem is, they don't

No CD key = no online play.
HL1 keys will work for EXISTING steam content. HL2 keys will work for HL2.

HL1 is pretty hard to play online without a valid CD key. Of course, many people have decided to become criminals and steal CD keys (effectively hijacking YOUR license) but thats equivalent to walking into the store and stealing the game so there's really not much Valve can do about that.

You(r "friend") should just buy the game.

No,

No CD key = No install

Key generator = key = Install

Key generator key = No multiplay.

he's not realy my friend, but he is also mod of a HL2 forum (like me) and I don't understand why he doesn't buy it. I want him to make it buy if he knows he can't play online with an illegal version

Xrenity, you know, any decent psyciatrist can help you with that. Split-personality disorders, while rare, are much easier to live with if you have the right treatment.

I hope you don't mean I have a split personality?
Just interested in what valve can/will do about it.
I'm going to buy this game for the full 100%

but in case you dont mean that, nvm.
(I'm dutch so I dont understand some things completely)

why do you callo them leechers anyway ("leecher" is a term for a person only grabbing stuff from others and neder sharing...not a very well seen being in the warez community)

leechers has basicly nothing to do with warez.... just though id mention :)

Leechers are always found in the bittorrent warez community, they download and then don't seed at all.

Well like almost all games i have... i leech them first... and if the game is good, i buy it .... it's "ok" i think.

Let me tell you what he meant: he thinks that your "friend" is imaginary, so do I. Have you seen 25th Hour by Spike Lee? the pedophile guy talking about his "friend"? kinda reminded me of that lol :)

Anyway the answer is a definite no, you cannot play online if you don't have the original: even with cd-key generators that allegedly work online you'll be able at the most to play on cracked servers which might not ping well, or be empty or whatever. If you want to play online there's no other way around the purchase, besides prices are so low over in the Uk you should pre-order: less than 45 euros for most parts of Europe.

If you already have the game you can call it a backup copy and it wont be illegal but otherwise it is.

i havent bought a game in like 3-4 years. but halflife2 is a must, i will buy it the day it comes out.

uhhhh yeah sure guy.

I think most ppl who use warez do just that since they don't like to shell out $60 or more for something they're only gonna play for a week or less.

If you or anyone else warez HL2 I will hunt you down and break your neck. Well...not really.

But to the guy that thought "leeching" a game then buying was "ok". News flash, its still against the law. And even though you may plan to buy it, its still illegal even IF you buy it.

All im saying is that VALVe put their hearts and souls into this game, its just not right to warez it, and if you do, I hope you get to rot in jail, or get a felony (sp?) for doing so.

I think that valve will probably not be hit too hard by warez, mostly because of new security, secondly because most people are going to buy it simply because it's an epic title. (epic as in really epic, not produced by Epic[i.e.unreal], stupids.)

I think you will have to register your copy of HL2 with your Steam account using a cdkey or whatever "password" method they decide on to define one copy from another.

1 "copy" of HL2 can only be registered once with Steam, on a single account but, once your steam account has activated a HL2 key, You can play any copy of hl2, anywhere, with your Steam account.

In one way, this is great for us and Valve scince, it will be all but impossible to steal someones CD key, and probably just as hard to create one.

On the other hand, the game will be tethered to the existence of Valve, no Valve, no play. Not that I'm actually worried about that sort of thing.

Yeah... Valve.. one of the biggest names in current pc gaming, making one of the best games ever to be seen on a pc are really going to make that mistake :/

Trust me... someone will crack it, someway. Whatever their 'security' methods are, someone will get through them. :(

Yet to see someone crack Tribes2's multiplayer security.

What did you ask Gabe? if you could crack his game and make illegal copies? lol :0

omg...
To be exact, I mailed this:
Thank you very much for your answers!
I Have another:
1.What will Valve do against warez? I hate it when all buch of kids play the game because they can simply download it. Will Steam have some thing that binds a key to an account, so no one else can use that key again?

Congratulations, I heard the 30th of September will be made :)
I hope it's a world wide release, so I (here in Holland) can buy the game the 30th also.

Thanks again
