how come these forums have 19,964 users and things move fairly slow (replies ,posts, ect)?

it has always sorta bugged me:farmer:

because about 19,500 of those users don't use their accounts.

You'd be suprised how many people sign up an account for every single forum they find, but then never use them. Similiarly there are loads of people who make an account, make about 5 posts, then get bored and move onto another forum / forget about this one.

Those are counted since 03 when the site first opened. Obviously not all those members are still here, as pre-HL2 release the hype was considerable and the activity was intense. Since it's release, things have calmed down naturally as anything would. However the site still maintains a great deal of members, old and new for the new projects valve bring out that people are interested in. Many of the interested parts of the community don't sign up to the site and view the news as guests, and there are huge numbers of people doing so. So to conclude, yes things aren't as hectic as before, but the community has become stabilised almost, with many regulars and it has become more close-knit, than vast.

Would it be an easy fix to alphabetize the active users? Wasn't it like that at one time?
