How complicated is your home network?

You don't have to have a diagram like I do. I only have this diagram because I'm trying to troubleshoot something on the network and I needed to demonstrate something to somebody else. Ignore the blurred stuff. :dork:


But yeah... my home network is annoyingly bloated. I hate dealing with stacked routers for pass-through and stuff, but I've grown fairly adept after messing with them so often.

I set up my laptop to fileshare with my desktop using a crossover cable, which is pretty cool. It's really fast.

I used to burn discs or use USB sticks to transfer stuff. That's lame.

Oh god, I feel sorry for you, that looks crazy. I hate networking passionately after all the trouble I've had over the years, I went back to basics. Used to have a 108mb router hardwired to my PC with 1 access point downstairs for 2 other PCs, and another 3 wireless g connections.

Now I just have a single modem / router downstairs, 2 hardwired pcs, 2 wireless g laptops, 1 wireless g desktop, my gaming pc on wireless N draft. Also got a VOIP phone & have my laptop connected to desktop with a crossover like Virus.

Yeah man it is pretty crazy.

I don't really have too many other options though.

I have to manage our home network since I'm the only one who knows how, and I have to do it with hardware we have.

The fact that we got cat-6 cable running through the walls/attic when we rewired all the electricity really helped things out a lot to some degree.

Nothing I imagine. We just didn't want to go with cat-5. Not sure what the differences are exactly.

lets see, got the main PC (this one) hooked up to DSL and the router with a main line. Also 3 main lines go to a PS3, Xbox 360 and my fathers Laptop. then the Wii and PSP connect wirelessly.

What difference did cat-6 make?

Cat 5 can go to speeds above 10/100 but not as you start getting into longer lengths of cable.
Cat 6 has more protection against interference and can easily do gigabit even with longer runs.

I do have a spare wifi router (54G and ports are 10/100) but I don't use it. Not unless I bought a ipod touch or netbook would I use wifi at home.
The first switch is an 8 port. The 2nd is a 4 port.

Anyway, what I mean of course is that the DHCP server of my router always assigns a static IP to my computers based on a MAC address.

Router with all computers in the house, a printer, PS3 and Wii connecting to it wirelessly at home. At uni we have a router with three of us and the 360 connected by ethernet cables and one person/ anyone with a laptop here connecting by wireless.
