How did the heart...

Maybe there was a really well-known duke of somethingeth, and he fell in love with a princess, and then she rejected him, and soon after he died of "heartbreak" because he had an unrelated heart attack during his time of sadness.

I have no idea how accurate that is. I pulled it out of my ass, you see.

[edit]
maybe because it hurts in your chest when they break it?

Because strong emotions cause your heart to beat faster.

That sounds about right. I wonder where the current 'heart' symbol comes from - whether it was a symbol for love that became associated with the heart, or if it's a crude representation of an actual heart?

Some guy got pissed at his now EZ wife, so he killed her, took her heart out , and stapled it to the wall, but the way he cut it out was in teh shape of <3..
True story, I was there..

>_>

the heart symbol most likely evolved from a crude drawing of a heart, if you draw one with a rounded base and one bum bigger than the other it almost looks like one.

and we can probably check on all this on wikepedia, but i agree with vegeta's thread, and the fact that for a long time the heart was seen as the center of emotion.

Lol cherry... If u want the geeky version search google VAlentines... if you dont want geeky keep reading cherry's post lol...

heart chakra, and you feel love as an emotion in your chest where your heart is... and i guess that's why. there's just some sort of association.

Actually in ancient egyptian times, the heart was also associated with thought, rather than the brain. They believed the brain was actually completely useless, which is why they didn't keep it during mummification.

Probably because the brain can't feel.

The heart, you definately can feel when emotional.

In fact, I bet the brain tried to trick us into believing the heart is important, so that we'd assassinate its main rival!

I was taught on school that the weird shape derived from a misunderstanding of some ancient description of the heart.

almost like.....

ok i'll stop before a mod hurts me.

He got it just like putting too much air in a balloon

Ugh, I hope you're joking when you say the brain can't feel. Strangely, there seems to be a lot of people who still believe the heart is an emotional epicenter. Why such misinformation still persists is beyond me. It's a multi-valved blood pump, nothing more.

As said before in the thread, the origins of the heart as a symbol stem from a few things. First and foremost, the heart was once believed (different time periods, however) to be the source of intellect and intelligence by some cultures, as well as the seat for human emotion. This myth was described in the bible, believed by Egyptians and later the Romans, and propogated by classical and medievil philiosophers and scientists in various forms. It is likely that this is the reason the heart later became subject to stylizations depicting the heart as a symbol of love and emotion.

Ofcourse, as also mentioned earlier, it is true that as the heart rate accelerates, one has a very distinct feeling in the area where it is located. My guess is this feeling resulting from heart contractions has more to do with the misconception of the heart being an emotional apparatus today, than the myth of long ago does. There's been some research done, apparently, that suggests the heart works in tandem with the brain to handle our emotions. Studies done by the HeartMath institute suggest the heart sends more signals to the brain than the brain does to the heart, but I would approach this with skepticism. Regardless, the first organ to handle our emotions is always the brain, and our physiology follows it's lead.

Cheers.

I believe I remember hearing somewhere that the shape of the heart symbol is actually a depiction of a womans, er.. buttocks. Might be wrong, though.

And by "somewhere" you mean that voice in your head, right?
