How did valve catch the people that got the leak

I remember reading somewhere that valve were given tips by some half-life fans about who stole the source code, when did this happen and who helped them get the ppl that done it.....where did it happen (forum maybe)?

I read some where that they were having help from people all over the world, but the main tip off came from some one in Germany, i think that was where any way ... I haven't got the magazine here with me to check.

Just as those that stole the leak were great hackers, there were better hackers out there that did their best to track them down. If I had that kind of expertice I would have gladly given Valve a hand and tried to track the guy down through the internet.

I mean hypothetically speaking here, let's say I stole Game X's source code and released it. I then read on the news that the company was using FBI help... Well then a few months later I get a call from the company asking if I wanted to join their team..... I would never do it, ever........ I mean I stole major shit from Game X and I would feel guilty working there and I could guess they found out right away.....

Actually, I believe the hacker turned himself in and gave out the names of the people responsible for spreading the stolen code.
