How Do .dem Files Work In HL1?

i just downloaded the .dem files for hl1 speedrun, i have hl 1.1.1.0 but i don't know how i should run the .dem files... plz help.

You need to open the console (with the button under the Esc key), and type 'playdemo filename' where 'filename' is the name of the demo you are trying to run. They should also reside in the directory '\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\YourSteamUsername\half-life 2', where 'YourSteamUsername' is your Steam account login name.

how do you open them in hl1?

No, you don't need Steam or HL2 for that.
You have to put the .dem file in HL1's game folder (I think it was 'valve' in non-steam version). Then, run the game, go to the console and type:
playdemo demoname
(the .dem at the end is not required).

Those bad host errors often have to do with different DLL versions. Maybe the speedrun was recorded on old HL1 and it doesn't work on Steam? (or vice versa)

it said it needed a hl version 1.1.2.0, what the hell is that? the latest i have is 1.1.1.0, that's the latest, right?

No, the latest version is the version on Steam, which is 1.1.2.0, I think.

If you have a legal version of HL1, it's easy to 'integrate' it with your Steam account. "Activate a product on Steam" should be it.

Yeah but if you've got old demos (pre-Steam) that probably won't work

Probably right in most cases! I kinda asssumed you were playin it on Steam jerkasaur. If you have a legit HL1 serial, it is extremely easy to install it on Steam, as Przemek suggested
