How do you cheat?

I press the ~ button and nothing seems to happen.

I honestly don't understand this...

At the main menu, go to options > keyboard > advanced and enable developers console.
Then press ` (the key under escape) and type in sv_cheats 1.
Cheat away!

I wouldn't cheat if you haven't completed the game. You don't get that big sense of achievement.

Tell your friend to turn the difficulty down to Easy.

sv_cheats 1, of course, only enables the use of cheats.
Once that's on, useful ones:
- god (no damage from anything)
- buddha (health never goes below 1)
- noclip (fly / no collisions)
- impulse 101 (all weapons, all ammo, and I think some health)
- impulse 203 (remove whatever you're looking at - useful when you're being mobbed by antlions and such)
Note that using some of those at certain points in the game will make it impossible for you to continue - if you have the gravity gun through impulse 101 before you visit Black Mesa East, you won't be able to get past the part where Alyx is supposed to give it to you, for example.

ch_createjeep I think allows you to get the car. I'm not sure, that was only out of memory.

Half Life on easy is harder than HL2 on Hard in my opinion.
Cheats also make a game dull. Remember how invincibility and invisibility didn't make you feel like Bond anymore in Goldeneye? Same deal here.

hmm... Well, I was going to insert the link to the HL2.net cheats site, but it seems to have disappeared. However there appears to be a new section entitled console commands that is not finished yet.

I never use cheats in Half-Life 2, the only reason I know them is for Garry's Mod where they can come in handy.

This is assuming you can do it anyway.
