How do you know Half Life is a trilogy?

I have read a bunch of posts saying Half Life is a trilogy, and Half Life 3 is the conclusion to this saga. Given the success of this series I find that hard to believe. Most likely there will be HL4, and 5 and 6...

They probably won't "conclude" the series but rather just write in other episodes of the HL universe when it suits them....like Star Wars.

It isn't. Valve disputed this, and it's unsure if there will be a HL4. But it's certainly not a trilogy.

Gabe in 2007: Ahhh yes, for our prequel to Half-life 4, which came out in 1998, Half-life Episode 1 will include a long lost relative to Barney, who is also Kleiner's father, his name is Jam-Jam BINK and he talks funny because he was actually raised by Headcrabs. He will be sort of a comic sidekick together with his friend, Bum-bum BINK, who is a serious, conservative security guard. They're the original odd couple! And yes, the game will include a love scene with Alyx, and her long lost twin, Alexus!

I agree they wont just stop at 3.

a trilogy does mean 3 btw so i dont think there going with a hl4 but i could be wrong guess we will have to wait and c

I wish they did just make it 3, make it a sweet and nice tight story. I want to get a life eventually, not just a...half-life!

I think most people refer to Half-Life, Half-Life Opposing Force and Half-Life BlueShift when speaking about the Half-Life "triology".

I sure don't.

I'm hoping for HL4 and 5 too, but I'm afraid it wont happen.

Yeah all good trilogies come in threes. lol.

Besides im sure ive seen it officially stated that there looking into HL3 and besides with a ending like HL2 had im sure theyre gunna make another!

Laidlaw says: trilology. Which means it IS a trilology, no matter if there are any other titles afterwards.

"No trilogy should have more than four parts."
-Arthur C Clarke

I don't know who Laidlaw is, but I doubt he said anything about a trilology.

He's the writer of the Half-life games.

I would like to think Valve arent gonna be a one-trick pony and after HL3 they move on to another franchise.

It'll be a however-many-they-can-get-us-to-buy-ology. I don't honestly believe there's a grand 'plot arc' (has Laidlaw said differently?), so there's no reason it couldn't be 4/5/etc if the games sell.

HHGTTG : Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. Advertised as a trilogy but wasn't one (deliberately).

Well... I don't recognize the new Star Wars "episodes", so to me, Star Wars is still a trilogy, true to the meaning of the word.

and Koopa, FFS, what were you expecting, a Stephen King novel? It's a video game, and a FPS at that. I think they did a grand job of weaving a plot into an action video game.

Yeah, I can understand that. I'm not a SW fan, but it seemed to me like the 'new' star wars were stuffed in, rather than planned for?

I'd hope for something a bit less trashy personally :)

I agree with this, I have no problems with the execution of it. Which part of what I said were you wanting to argue with?

I couldn't agree more.

Stephen King novel? Trashy? You're kidding, right? Or am I just misunderstanding you?

/me looks through thread... I don't remember... maybe it was something you said in a different thread... lol...

I think they will stop at 3. MAYBE go on to 4 but idk. All I can say is: It's gonna be sad when it all ends. :(

No, I'm really not a fan (for the most part). Tastes differ, I guess *shrug*.

I think it was the 'Official Ending Poll' thread that you want to be flaming me in ... I'm looking forward to it :D

I've read a few of his books, and I was always very impressed. They're not at all like the cheap movies based on his books. Check out The Stand.

Oh, right! Thanks!

Ok, let's get started shall we?

Star Wars 4,5,6 are the original Trilogy. 1,2,3 are the new Trilogy. Put them altogether and they're described as a saga (Sextology???).

Gabe said, kinda jokingly, that they were now working on HL3 - there's going to be one for sure though.

Stephen King novels are pretty Trashy - they're never going to be classed as Intellectual Literature (but if that's what you like to read that's cool, I like Terry Pratchett - he's no Jane Austen!)

And finally - as much as I'm looking forward to another few HL sequels I'm also excited to see what else Valve are able to create!

I hope they end it with halflife3 and then give us something completely new. just as good....maybe even better.

I'd hate it if the series continued on to Half Life 4 and 5 etc.
The quality would just drop and we'd end up with a series that never really gets resolved and has no sense of direction.
Look at the Nightmare on Elm Street films, or Halloween etc. Started off cool and fun but outstayed their welcome with excessive sequels. The last thing we need is "Half Life VII: The Search for Barney", or "Half Life IX: G-man vs Predator"
One more game should be made and then it should be ended as a trilogy. It might be tempting to do a fourth game but there needs to be some restraint. Valve need to be able to stand back and say "Thats all folks!"

Yeah, I'd like just one more HL game that concludes the series and we have a nice Trilogy on our hands to enjoy. Then I'd like to see what the talent at Valve can do without the limits of the HL community (in other words, sticking to strict guidlines in order to stay true to the HL universe).

I hope the Half Life series goes on for a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time!!!!!

;) Just hoping to catch some Valve attention!!
