I don't get it. Even if the dude did leak it how come that puts the release date back? Surely valve would have loads of copies of it and have it stored in stand alones. I dont get it :dozey:

What did he actually do to their source code apart from copy it? lol they should just pay him 20k or sumthing to get it all back if he's wiped it all

He copied it. Valve still have the game.

Its implications are complex
I suggest you read other threads for more info
But simply
Valve could be in legal trouble
Hackers can use this source to make upstopable cheats
Other stuff i cant go into cos i need a shit.

sorry, gota go......

CD key authenticiation, Steam has been comprimised, and hackers will use the code to make UBER H4X ALL UP IN YOUR HIZZIE!!!

So they say.

Don't beleive all the hype regarding what the haxors can do.

They could do it anyway with the Retail version of the game.

Because hackers will go through the code and find out all the weakness and make uber cheats that will ruin the multiplayer.

They need to delay the game to 2004 so they can all take a 16 week IT class on server security.

For the last time, cheats are not the main issue.. forget it you wont listn anyway.

Oh, I will listen, but you have to say something first.

Cheat are one issue, not the only issue of course, but nothing that is never fixed with about 6 patches in the first 2 weeks after the release.

They want to rewrite a lot of the story lines and such I would think since this beta has a few levels with story lines... so they say.

Gilgamesh, I think you underestimate what a hacker could do with the source code. They now know basically how the entire game works from the inside out, with that kind of knowlege it's incredibly simple for a skilled hacker to construct cheats.

Maybe.

Tell me how that cheat will exactly get into a close source retail release?

Sure, you now know what prosesses to look for with the open source, but that's nothing that can't be learned from the closed source code anyway.

It would have been freaking funny if the hack0r cut instead of copied and vavle only had the source on one pc, what are the chances but still, I would have probably cried out of despair and laughter @ the same time. lolies

*Gabe walks up to delay announcement podium* *clears throat*

"HL2 has been canned because that bastid hacker ctrl+x'ed the source instead of ctrl+c'ing it, sorry about that"

*pulls trigger*

P.S. Nobody needs to explain to me about valve never only having one copy of anything, ktnxbi

Don't look at me, I'm not much of a hacker myself. But lets say you have a pointer that changes a value in memory, and that's your remaining ammo (very simple I know, but it'll do). With a closed source you can monitor your memory with a third party program and maybe through days of watching and testing you might find the memory location that control remining ammo and change it.

With open source that would take 2 minutes, and you have the added bonus of seeing exactly how this area is used, what functions use it and when it's used. Things like that wouldn't be possible with a closed source and opens up a whole new list of things you could do.

i doubt they'll re-write the story... that would be quite the task! I think they are just trying to change their API's a little so that the source code is rendered close to useless.

Also they need to change all their encryption algorithms for paying online for steam (if this was compromised) and their STEAM:ID authentication methods.

not a simple task but much simpler than rewriting everything

it basically makes half life 2 as vulnerable as M$ outlook
not that bad really

Valve doesn't need to rewrite the game from scratch, they just need to tighten up their netcode.

yea, ^ that would be insane... would take a year or more to rewrite everything

Can't they just patch it when the hacks start coming out? The hacker would need to be stupidly smart to make a hack from looking at the source code and without playing the retail version.

I don't think there is such a thing as a smart hacker lol. If he was he wouldn't have given them the excuse to "put the release date back". He claims it's incomplete but he shouldn't have given them the excuse in the first place.

They should make a dedicated Cheating Death kinda thing just for HL2 and have an entire team working on it

this wasn't no ordinary leak, buddy.
source code was leaked. :|
along with the beta ver. of the game.

:x

Somebody thought, that after the September delay you would still see this game this year?? BWHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!
