I havent been in the know about hardware for long and have have a quesion. Are video cards that are highend now slowly become mid range and low end over time, or are new midrange cards introduced and the old highend ones forgotton about?

Highend are becoming mid range now, For example the 9800pro was very high end a year ago, but now it is about midrange, while the former midrange (9600xt) are now becoming lowend.
No doubt this will happen with the current highend in a year or so.

on the other hand, some of the very high end cards will never become mid-range. sometimes the highest-end cards are such an extravagent piece of hardware that it's not possible for their prices to go down very much, due to the nature of the production process.
