How does this system look?

Put it together using Microsoft Excel and Newegg and a few other sites. Figured some of you maybe interested in this, so I'll go ahead and post it. Took me about 2 or 3 days to put together, but I personally think it would be a kick ass low budget Half-Life 2 system.

A long time member should know better.

For the record, that system is almost identical to mine (Athlon 64 3000+, 1024mb PC2700, 9800 pro 128mb) and it should be just fine for HL2.
 
Not sure about the Speakers, them are very cheap and while im sure they would work, I want something that would knock me on my a$$. Probably up the speakers by about $200 and that would be the total.
 
instead of the Logitech speakers get the zalman 5.1 head phones, there cheaper and are kick ass! If your MoBo supports it that is....
Also, a nice addition (with the zalmans) would be a Sound Blaster Audigy ZS you wouldnt even have to go platinum or pro, but the sound quality increase plus the eax is well worth the extra 100 bucks
 
Damn, I got mine for $1400 and that's a better system then mine..except mine came with keyboard and mouse but they sucked ass so I bought new stuff.

Good syste...good price...But far from budget. A busget system that will perform well in HL2 can be had for half that price
 
You are drastically over paying for your graphics card. A 9800 Pro should be close to $200. For the price you are paying, you can buy a Nvidia 6800. The 6800 is about 30% faster than a 9800 Pro.

Other things:

- You can buy your mouse cheaper on newegg.com
- I would look for a different monitor. Try viewsonic. I don't know squat about Dell monitors.
- You are missing a case. :p
 
Good system. I like the price of your crt monitor. I hope the quality'll be alright. How about a dvd drive? May I suggest the lite-on dvd 16x dual layer writer (around 75$)

Dont be fooled by the extra ram, the 256mb pro version only performs the tinyest* bit more compared to the 128mb pro... They add more ram to make you feel like its needed, when really it would just collect dust... if you want the better card, go for the 9800XT or just stick with the 9800pro 128mb.

I have a 9800pro 128 and can run CS:S full details (inc 6x AA) at 1024x768, (not tryed any higher) with an average of 80fps.

Buy a CRT at a local shop if possible. Shipping & handling will be killer on a monitor.

I don't know how good dell monitors are, but that's seriously cheap for a 21" monitor. Generally cheap monitors don't have great image quality though.

People really underestimate the importance of a good monitor, it can improve the look of your games massively. It's like buying an expensive stereo and hooking up mediocre speakers to it. I'd recommend for the money you get a quality 19" instead, one with a small dot-pitch that does 1600x1200 at 75hz or more, and has very good brightness and contrast performance. Look around for some monitor reviews, they'll note the image clarity and colour accuracy of different models. Respected brands i know of are mitsubishi, Iiyama, and ctx, and of course sony, but sony's have a price premium.

Also $275 for a 9800 pro isn't worth it, the current generation of cards outperform it by 2-3x and open up high resolution gaming on the latest games, for only 25% more cost. Especially as you're buying a big monitor, you really ought to get a card that can let you use it at full resolution to get the best experience. I'd suggest you go for an x800 pro VIVO or a 6800GT at around $375-$400. You can keep your budget by recyling your keyboard and mouse from your old system, a current generation 3d card will give you much more enjoyment than the 9800 and a new mouse. Also a current gen card will last a whole lot longer than the 9800 when it comes to future gaming, nobody wants to have to upgrade their most expensive component 12 months after purchasing it.

Just my advice anyway. :)
 
wth!? your paying 275.00 for a radeon 9800? thats a no no ... u can buy nvidia 6800 for almost the same price ...
 
That is so far from a low budget system it's not even funny...

Sidenote: I assembled a system far outperforming that one for about 500-600 €, but I'll hafta look it up again and I can't be arsed.. (only thing missing is a video card :))

The only thing about that rig that is not good, is the GFX card...
Using a 1024 resolution in HL2, you´ll get 40 fps at max..
Get a Nvidia 6800gt and you´ll get 90..

I have the identical mobo, CPU and ram! I think you will be very happy, but one word of caution, this mobo does not seem very CPU overclock freindly. I have not had much luck oc'ing it regardless of other settings, even when using thier windows based program to oc (although I would rather use BIOS, and that did not work either). Although I WAS able to run the dam valueselct ram to 2-2-2 and ran memtest no problems (have been using it this way for about a month with heatspreaders on the ram with no probs) so I would not let them dis the corsair valueram. Many more expensive sticks wont get near this!

Looks like a decent system. Isn't 50 bucks for a mouse excessive?
 
Scrape together $500 more and you can clean up on some of those generic parts.
