In HL games, comsider the Icthoysuars a minute( and the leeches). They live in water, its their habitat. yet, during both the Resonace Cascade and the Portal Storms, it was all random, so it would be pure-blind luck if they teleported into the water. So how come there are no beached creatures in HL? How come the water creatures atumatically appear in their favourite enviroments?

At first I lmao'd, but then I relised that was a perfectly good solution...but how come the creatures somehow got in the sea?
I suppose it only takes a couple of creatures to appear then breed. After 20 years they cover the whole sea.
Oh Fie! I answered my own question.:P

The first ichthyosaur you encounter in HL1 might not've been teleported in, and if it had, then it was moved to that location rather than being teleported to it. Remember that the scientist that tells you about the ichthy says that it's been here for over a week, and it was in a pen of sorts; there was a diver's cage, electrified fences, everything. They were studying it there. The scientists might've pulled it right off of Xen and plopped it into the lab.

As for things that came in through the resonance cascade and the portal storms...well, I'm sure some of them got beached. I'm sure some creatures that aren't amphibious got ported into the water as well...maybe some unlucky headcrabs or houndeyes. There were probably all sorts of portal anomalies; remember how sometimes in HL1 creatures would fall out of the sky? Think about if one of those portals popped open TOO high, hehe.

The reason we don't see these kinds of things is, well...there's no reason to show these things in-game. It wouldn't make for a very good introduction to the ichthyosaur if we were wandering around outside and we came across this giant fish lying on its side, gasping for air. That's not scary or threatening; we'd just step around it. Although I will say it would've been hilarious if there was a scene where you were walking through the facility, and all of a sudden an ichthy appeared in front of you and fell to the floor. That'd be great. I'm sure it happened SOMEWHERE in the facility, we just didn't see it. ;)

Earth is more water than landmass and sea creatures traditionally breed rather quickly. But yeah, there was bound to be Ichty's teleporting in on say a freeway. Just like say headcrabs teleport into the middle of a wall. Hurtful...

I agree especially when considering that Xen creatures are way more aggressive than most of what we have here on Earth which means that they have most likely just eaten all the opposition (possibly all the way to extinction in some cases) they've encountered in our seas.

I still want to see a picture of the Itchy that warped into a swimming pool in Raising the Bar. That sounded hilarious.

That kept me guiglling like a school girl for some time. Heehee.
My mate and me were discussing it, and he mentioned it would be funny if a vort appeared inside of someone.:p

That actually I'm sure would've appeared quite disturbing...

You said that, as if the ichthyosaur isn't adapted to dry landmass..

Ichthyosaurs and leeches couldn't have just eaten everything else, otherwise they would have starved to death by now (it's a wonder antlions haven't)

Can you spawn an icthyosaurs on dry land during the game or in Gmod?

Or does it have to be spawned in water?

I'm sure there are certain rules of teleportation that none of us understand.

Any icthyosaurs teleported over dry land would decompose and disappear. The one you see in the water during the teleport accident was one that teleported over water, hence it's survival.

Oooh good point. 20 years is certainly enough time for antlions, tides, seagulls and just normal weathering would certainly make most large animal carcasses not much more than a couple ribs and a skull...

I see an icthyosaurs, some what of a alligator. It can survive in water for long amounts of time, but must come up for some type of air. Seeing how it is a Alien species, we could know two peanuts in a shit about it.

i think it's more of a fish than a reptile

i know its a fish for a fact because why would they give it the prefix icthy if it wasn't.

Ah, but ichthyosaur means "fish lizard." So there you go. :p Ichthy- (as a prefix) can have a few other meanings as well.

I think GMan might have it backwards; ichthys breathe through their gills, taking oxygen from water, but they can hold their breath for some time and surface when they need to grab prey. You notice the ichthyosaur never really comes up for air...it only surfaces when it's trying to get at food. And even then, the gills of the beast are almost never raised out of the water.

if they could leave the water other than just surfacing, they would have legs

Those fins like little legs/fins. You know, the little feet to the ichthyosaur, and uh... small arms to the T-Rex.

I think it'd still be awesome for it to surface our of water, and able to crawl the dry land for a certain amound of time, and need to get back into the water. It'd be more challenging. You get out of the water, and you think you don't need to fight it, then it pops out and starts hobbling after you.
