I'm new here, especially because I'm of the rarer xbox players, but I thought if anyone would be interested, it'd be someone here. Also, it seems no one has done this before without cheating.
I don't have, and won't be able to take, any pictures. The whole thing was the unexpected result of doing stupid things and seeing how the game reacted (ex: Vortigaunts and Antlion Guards do not like it when you carry rollermines in from Highway 17), so here goes:
I was in Sandtraps, had passed through the rebel camp and was working my way up the cliffside into Nova Prospekt, when I reached the two zombies beside a fire, boat, and dock. I was ducking around the zombies and trying to lure them through the fire when I noticed, beside the boat, two boathooks or gaffs. I used them on the zombies, and as they were so useful, decided to carry one with me at all times.
Now that you know the location, you know how I did it, but here are a few helpful tips for bringing Alyx her present:
1. You can't carry it up that first ladder. Stick it in the cliffside that you'll jump to after you climb the ladder.
2. Don't use it against turrets. On the xbox it will cause the game to freeze, probably because no one at Valve expected you to try and pin a turret to a wall.
3. Do use it against everything else. I don't think it can hit a Combine Gunship , but it is a one-hit kill for Poison Zombies, Antlion Guards, Manhacks (if you can hit the little guys it pins'em frozen in midflight), and all the rest except for Barnacles. I'm still working on those Gunships.
4. If you kill Alyx before she opens a door (or deactivates a force-field) so that you may continue solo, you'll be stuck. Also, her pistol disappears when she dies.
5. Navigating the boathook through the first vent in Nova Prospekt (hidden behind bookshelves, as Alyx'll point out) can be hellish. The boathook will always try and rotate clockwise (or to the right) at the first corner. To get it pointing down for the drop after that, drag the point of the boathook from the bottom of the opposite side to to the top, and then drop it before it rights itself. It will take time and some luck.
6. You can kill Dr. Mossman and still continue. You have to kill her as she's exiting the room you find her in and going into the big teleport chamber, pinning her against the wall opposite the door. Alyx won't notice it, and continue to talk to her as if she's still living. Because Mossman is dead, however, she won't activate the control that brings in Eli. You can hear him talking if you go to the opening he comes into the room from, but he's never actually teleported. What's the alternate timeline on that?
Less Important Stuff:
1. You can use the boathook to jam open/shut jail doors in Nova Prospect. It will most likely be irretreviably stuck after that.
2. After sending her father to the next chamber so that she may talk to him, Alyx will take down a forcefield. Do not use the boathook on any of the following Combine until Alyx talks to Eli. For some reason a boathook kill doesn't seem to get counted, so Alyx is left perpetually looking for that one last Combine. (You can tell Eli's been through a lot, doesn't bat an eye if you kill her in front of him. Just stops talking and averts his gaze.)
3. Don't kill the two Combine in the occupied (as Alyx will voice over) control room with the boathook (the same room you first pick up turrets in). Alyx will still unlock the turrets for you, but for some reason will not reprogram them. So when you set them up, they will only fire on you. Alternatively, consider this a challenge for those who don't need'em.
4. If you kill Alyx when she steps into the teleporter, you'll get stuck in a "fight you can't win" that the G-man offers in the first Half-Life. When you get low on health, any Combine you kill will drop small health vials. And they're always bringing in more ammo.
5. You can't take it with you past the teleporter. Same counts for turrets. Damn.
I think that covers all of it. Happy teamkilling!
