How Important Is Money?

Does it make me shallow to say lots of money would make me happy? Of course some of the best things in life are free, but money brings loads of other things. I'm just being honest...

Don't try and think of money like they are Hell's poker chips.

It's a form of earned trade.

If you earn it, it'll buy you things 50x more meaningful for you.

Okay...well if i go outside and yell abuse at my mate across the street, that will make me happy because he stole my pokemon cards. Then i'll feel good, that was free. (unless you wanna be picky and say that it took energy to do that, and the food you bought cost money which is therefore is not free, if thats what you mean, i do not care for that arguement and i'm going to defenestrate you)

p.s. this above situation never happens, but i miss pokemon! :dozey:

I think you misunderstood... I wasn't talking about money. Every action has a consequence.

Of course you need money to be happy. Saying otherwise is ridiculous. Ask the people living in the dirty overcrowded streets of India if they are happy. Ask the emaciated victims of the Ruanda famine if they're happy. Ask any poor person and you'll see they are not happy. Money ensures the essentials of a happy life; good health care, a house, and food. No money, means no essentials of life so all your time would be spent on looking to attain these by being exploited, working until exhaustion, and living a misaerable life. However, money goes beyond the essentials. You have to have enough money to be live a care free life to be one step closer to happiness. You might have enough money for the essentials but you will still be living a miserable life in trying to reach financial freedom and getting the things those around you have, i.e. a car, a house, and some presentable clothes. Once you're in a stable financial position, you can start enjoying life and getting the things you want (not true neccesities). However, you can never be truly happy from materialistic possesions alone. Friends and family is what makes your life livable. Thus, money is not the sole factor of being happy but it is an essential one. Friends and family are more important to being happy than money but both are needed. I believe money is needed to achieve a certain level of financial freedom so you can calmly enjoy life with those close to you and thus, achieve happiness.

This is a world where money is valued more than a human life, what do you think?

Avatar stoled by who?

Money buys you oppertunities, some of which, can bring happiness... some can bring lonliness.. you just have to be wise in what you do. Money would give me oppertunities, for a better job, better accomodation and a better quality of life, but not neccesarily happiness. Happiness is what you make of it.

It's hard not to be greedy when you live in society where money is power.

Knowledge is power...power leads to corruption. Go to school. Be evil.

Dunno where I got that from, someone's sig on here I think. It was worth repeating, at least.

Money leads to greed, greed leads to corruption, corruption leads to fear, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate. Hate leads to the dark side.

Darth Vader must be rich.

That isn't enteriley true, you can have power and not be rich, or you can be rich an not have power. Like a police officer for example, they are on of the most powerful people in our nation and they get pretty low pay.

I'd prefer a global system of 'credits' that can be accessed via fingerprint and PIN combination and used to purchase goods, so we don't actually have to carry money around with us.

Ideally i'd prefer a system that didnt need currency, but where everyone worked to better the society and could expect to be homed, fed etc by the society they worked for. Hang about, isn't that communisim?

Yes...

What was that quote again?

You can't buy everything with money, but you can't buy anything without it
On a more serious note, I've read somewhere that the more money you have, the happier you are, up to US$10000 (or was it $1000?) per year. Once you go over that money doesn't make you any happier.

Edit: btw ritz your new avatar looks awful, is that a cross or a tombstone?

In this society money is needed...but not for happiness. IMO

We need money to buy the things we need (food, water, etc), not happiness. If you get good grades, etc, you'll be happy.

I need as much money as I can.

Lets say that you had 500 quadrillion dollars.

what would you do with it? would you even be able to spend it all?

why would you need it for?

If I had that much money I would give it to some charity, buy out Microsoft and get the best computer I can. Then laugh at my friends after throwing money at them.

For comfort and happiness, the same principle as a condom; you'd rather have one and dont need any, than needing one and dont have any.

Great idea, but your 'friends' might not be friends anymore and rob you.

of course, you could hire bodyguards.....

If you had that much money inflation would be around 100000000000000000000%, so basically everyone else's money would be completely worthless and the global economy would collapse, so you wouldn't be able to buy anything anyway.

Inflation : a rich man's worst enemy :|

Money is necessary. I'd rather buy a Mars bar with a few coins than trying to exchange a donkey for a Mars bar and taking 6 sheep and 5 chickens as my "change".

But, as far as "does money make you happy", that depends on you. Most poor people will say that it doesn’t, most rich people I’ve heard make a comment about it say something along the lines of, “It gives you more options”.

I would say that the happiness gained from money comes from status anxiety. The reason a poor person doesn’t care much about money is that their friends don’t have much money, so there is less to compete with. What I mean is, if the Jones’s across the road can’t afford a BMW, you’re not going to be all that fussed about owning one. Owning a BMW is not going to bring you a greater status to those around you, so you don’t care.

Another example is the chav’s comments about buying tracksuits. To a chav, owning the right brand tracksuit and a nice burbry cap is important, because it shows status in the chav world among his chav friends. The same can be said for millionaires and the length of their yacht. Its all about how good you look compared to those you associate yourself with.

Those that say money is all important to happiness obviously put a much greater importance in their status than most. They not only want to be “better” than those around them, but they also want to surpass them, and reach a much “better” overall status, or “class”.

Personally I’ve never been concerned by others and what makes them happy. That’s why I’ve never been into cars or bothered to learn what the hell GTI stands for. If it gets me where I need to be, that’s the car for me; and if it’s cheap, even better. I’ve never concerned myself with my status, I buy what I need/want and don’t look to others for guidance in what will make me happy because I see status anxiety as an illusion.
