How long before you're bored of physics?

This thread hijacking brought to you by Maskirovka.

speaking of useless, hmm your post fits into that category.
can't people like you just ignore stuff they don't like? do you really have to post and say "blah blah i'm an ass and i think i'm better than you blah blah"

And then:

i'm not like you...i.e. not "king of the forum who needs to rule the forums with an iron fist and tell everyone else how useless they are"

You should take your own advice bro. That's all he was trying to say.

Oh, and calm down dude - you flip out way too easily.

so are we goin to stick to the subject in hand, or jus have ago at each other over very little things like "O i don't like this thread" and the other says "HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT."

man i think you both have to take a chill pill and if u don't like this thread, then why waste your time on this thread reading comments and replying?

come on ppl HALF LIFE 2 WILL COME THIS YR!!!! it must be getting to all of us now!

i feel like adam sandler in anger management "calm down sir"...."i am calm"

put down the tazer, "bro."

whatever, i guess i'll just let you guys verbally rape everyone if you want to waste your time doing it :p

WELL SAID man!!! the only post that makes sence in this thread! nice one

back to the physics thing...

i'm quite anxious to see what people come up with (and what valve has already come up with) for interesting multiplayer maps that use the physics engine for it's max potential. it'll be cool to see what people can do and still keep the lag low.

i am goin to make a phsics map before i create my sp level for it.

i am goin to create a quick stair map, with enermy at to and BIG boxes behind. ALSO camera at bottom recording it all with screens around playing it. anyway boxes fall on him and he falls down the stairs with boxes to.

when he reaches bottom he should hit the camera. would be funny.

I just saw the tunnels vid again (for the 154th time i might add :D), the 1st manhack attacks gordon shortly after the vid begins---but when it flies/crashes through the crate in front of gordon it doe'snt splinter like the wood planks we see all over the place....why is that exactly??

sorry if this has been mentioned before..

Oh yeah and i'll never grow tired of the HL2 physics...they're magical :p

in fact it actually makes me think: "look at that, what an arse!"

Can a mod please sticky Dj's post, it was very informative and I think all members should see it. We need more members posting quality like him.

I've already got a physics degree. If gamevoodoo ever gets one, I'll eat my hat. In fact, no. I'll eat my TV.

errr......what am i supposed to say here. well what physics degree are u talking about? the undergraduate one? no, i'm not getting the undergraduate physics degree.

Originally posted by MoJo|Night Voodoo, how do you know it keeps swinging? in the video you see it for what? 4 maybe 5 swings? You'd need to sit and watch it for about a minute at least to make any sort of judgment on the air resistance on the beam and the ropes.

The beam just seems to me keep swinging in the traptown video, maybe i should buy the game and watch the beam swinging for a while.

Don't be rediculous. If there was no friction in HL2's physics engine, bodies, boxes, and anything else would slide endlessly along the ground as if it were ice.

The beam in traptown kept swinging because the only thing to slow it down is air resistance, and very little of it. In real life, the beam would continue to swing, just as in the video. Does this mean there's no friction in real life? Of course not.

Eventually, the beam would slow down, but it would take quite a while.

When there's no friction, it doesn't necessarily mean things can slide endlessly. without friction u can't walk forward, ur car won't move....etc. besides, there's initial in everything, they are either moving or not moving at all.

In real life, the beam will stop swinging, the periode will get smaller and smaller, cuz there's friction in real life. Air resistance is just one thing, how about the rope and the pulley where it hangs?!!

Now back to the game, the friction in game is different from the friction in reallife, cuz the game physics is still limited(can't simulate perfectly the real life physics. have u flown in a game using the cheat code? when u fly in the game, u can move forward by simply pushing the forward button without needing to do anything to push ur back. in real life, u can simulate such situation in space, but wheter there's friction or not, u can never move forward without pushing urself from the back.

What i want to point out is that the friction in videogame is not a rule in the game's world, but it's scripted.

I don't understand why you're insisting that friction isn't a part of the physics engine. Friction is a vital and integral part of any physics engine, especially engines such as Havoc that attempt to simulate physics as realistically as possible.

In the havoc physics engine, everything has a 'friction' parameter, which determines how the engine will deal with it when collisions occur. In the source engine, this will most likely mean that each "material" will have a defined friction value (which will most likely be alterable). When two objects slide against each other, the engine calculates the resistance produced according to both objects' friction values, and with how much force the objects are moving. If the engine didn't do these friction calculations, objects would slide against each other without ever slowing down, hence producing the "on-ice" effect I described before. I'm sure an engine as advanced as Havoc's has various things implemented to simulate the effect of air resistance, and other minor producers of friction\resistance, to ensure that, for example, that bar won't swing forever.

As for the eating my TV comment, I actually felt kinda bad after saying it, but I stick by it's implication - you're not an expert at physics.

Well it does make me wonder whether you have a widescreen or some small tv.

About the friction thing, I find it hard to believe that there wouldn't be any in Source. Seems like an easy thing to implement. Also, gabe said a dev made a mini-tornado, wouldn't that be impossible without air friction?

Or let's say you block a hallway with a table, the soldier climbs on top to get over, you shoot out the legs, he falls, slides down the table, onto the ground, and you shoot him in the head. Think that's possible? I hope so.

been asked before, and it's NOT possible, if you shoot the table legs, the table just crumbles.

Probably a VERY long time...

shoot, look at UT2k3, first game to (well, poular game) add physics to corpses.

People STILL talk about it! and I still have great fun watching it.

I've been looking for that info, does anyone have the link for it?

re: friction, Gabe talked about friction in an e-mail, it's in the game. Search the Valve Infor thread for 'friction'.

We won't get 'tired' with the physics so to speak, we will just become acquainted with them, well be used to the realistic physics and expect them in all games to come. Right now we are like "OMFGZ WE CAN BREAK THIS?!" and it's really cool, but soon after we get over the awe of it well be focusing on how to use it in our gameplay; "Well I can lob a nade through this window and bounce it off that will, kill those guys, then hide behind this crate for about 3 seconds then dash to that other metal crate which they can't break". Not nescessarily that complex but you get the idea.

i THINK it's in the post info form valve sticky thread

I wonder if objects will be able to bend, for example if I pushed a plank of wood/plastic (something long and bendy) over a wall, then drived a car on top to stop it from falling off, would I be able to jump on it and use it as a diving board? :D

Or use the same idea to make a trap and launch someone high another so they fall to their death :)

I love physics!

As I've seen others say, I love real-life physics and never get tired of it. I have also been playing Halo since Dec. '01, and it has one of the better physics systems of all the games I've played, and I still enjoy launching Warthogs and such.

No, I doubt that I will get tired of HL2 any time soon.

Objects won't be able to bend, though there are ways you could get a diving board to work fairly realistically without it actually bending (ie setting up springs)

OMFG, that was the funniest thing I've read in my life! How about this? You kick a barrel at an enemy and it trips him. He falls through a window breaking glass while shards enter his heart liver and intestinal organs. He lands on a ramp and his flimsy dead corpse rolls off onto a car smashing it, then the barrel rolls off and falls on top of him and lights on fire then explodes. I'd like to see that!
