How long between preloading and release?

Okay, so Half-Life 2 is preloading tonight at 6pm PST, "for sure this time." While hypothetically the preload is just static information like sounds, textures, and other finalized assets, Valve has to know that it's not terribly prudent to give the community all this information, encrypted or not, without delivering the game in short order.

So, with this in mind, how long after tonights preload do you forsee the release of Half-Life 2 finally happening?

It depends on what the current status is. Valve were supposed to have sent RC1 to Vivendi at the start of August, but we never heard confirmation of when this happened or indeed anything about the status of HL2 since.

If we assume that they hit RC1 on the 5th August and each RC will take 10 days from Valve to Vivendi to QA tests to the next RC then I reckon it's a possibility we'll see the game going gold in the next few weeks.

After that we wait another few weeks and mid Sept to early Oct - we're playing it

3 weeks was the closet to my answer, I'd say 4 or 5 weeks. Hopfully! Seems almost done to me, maybe going gold in late sep. if there are a few major bugs. But its seems to me like things are moving pretty smoothly now. This is good.

my guess is simply this. Now that the major crash bugs to the source engine are solved. Valve is compiling the RC for the next couple days than off to vivendi. So my best guess is by the end of sept if everything goes extremly smooth. I.E. vivendi doesnt send the candidate back.

Please remember this is all speculation. Just know with this preload, its comming...

Um, doesn't one month fit a lot closer to 4-5 weeks than three weeks?

It seems most of the bugs are related to gamecode specific to CS. Who knows if they'll delay for something like that.
