6, though technically it's 8. I use my pinky fingers for the left-edge keys (ctrl, shift, capslock) and my right pinky for ctrl, shift, and enter. My ring fingers are used for tab, tilde, backspace, and backslash.

I think I use most of my fingers to type. Yeah, I type similar to sinkoman using the pinkies for those keys and not using the left thumb. hehe

Although I use my right pinky for P too. Might be because my keyboard is at a slant from my chair atm. I only use the hunt and peck method if I'm using 1 hand to type.

There's no 'proper' way to type.

There is one official way of typing that is taught, so by default it's the "proper" way. There's only two ways of typing, the home row method or an improvisional self tought method.

Home row uses all the fingers, which enables maximum efficiency. 10 is certainly more efficient than 2, obviously not including the fact that you may be used to that way. That is irrelevant. There's a reason it works so well with keyboards, that's the way they are designed.

I have never learned how to type proper with homerow keys and such. However, I type faster than most people I know using my "all fingers all over the keyboard" technique.

As I recall from typing class in school, it's considered proper to use your right thumb only, though I'd imagine if anything varied in what is considered "proper," it would be that. Oh, and I type using a Dvorak keyboard layout instead of the more common Qwerty layout.

8, plus the thumbs. I took a typing class in high school, learned to type the "proper" way, with the home row. The left pinky is A, Q, Z, Tab, Caps, and Shift, the right pinky is :, ", P, [, ], ?, Backspace, Enter, and Shift (not including the keys in the number row). I use the space bar with my right thumb. Last time I checked when I took the typing class, I had an average WPM of about 50, and highest I could get was about 80.
