That's how they spell it...Toronto Maple Leafs..

The team has been around since the 40's I think, so I don't know the reason why it's Leafs. It does sound better though.

I think its more likely because they aren't actually leaves, and leaf is the name of the team members(Like calling someone a Mighty Duck, out of the Mighty Ducks...yeah yeah, its an example we all know ) and the team Das a whole is known as the leafs. When you give a name like leaf to a team of people, the same rules apply that would apply with any name. So its like saying a' David,' 'many Davids.' You wouldn't say 'Many Davies' or something.
