How much does HL2 cost on Steam?

no official word i think, but i would say $50, the normal new game price in the USA.

Im thinking it will cost the same as the sores or mabey $5 less but eather way its not gona change much from the stores.

Thats interesting that they are letting all these people download it without telling them how much it will cost. They are probably planning on charging the usual $50, but are trying to get people to preload thinking it will cost less. Then when Valve tell them the real price they will just say "Meh, I've already got it, I won't bother to drive to the store to get it."

Therefore Valve = $$$

i would probably go out and buy it, i like the box and maybe have some kool goodies inside the box

Condition Zero was $29.99 via Steam and about £19.99 (retail) in the UK. Therefore, I think HL2 will be $49.99 via Steam - and you should see it retail at the usual price - £34.99 in the UK (online-retailers will be chepaer, as ever).

Since valve makes about three times as much money of every copy sold through steam the price will be lower.

They want to sell as many copies as possible through steam.
Which is fine by me, I always throw away the box and manual after a week anyway...

do you know if the special edition with HL1 port and CS:S will be released by steam, or is that a shop only thing?

i think HL2 will cost just as much on Steam as it will retail.

my reasoning? Steam is still a fairly new concept program and im sure it took Valve some extra financing to get this system working.. so in order to make a profit off Steam, HL2 will probably need to sell close to retail price if not the same exact price.

i think later on when Steam has paid for itself, Valve will lower Steam prices for new games but for now i am not expecting it to be too much cheaper on Steam than retail.

hope that made some sense :P

There's going to be some form of discount for pre-orders, I bet.

Thats a good question, Im kinda curious about this myself,

Anybody know???

There will be a Special Edition over Steam and a Colectors' Edition with physical items in the stores.

From www.valvesoftware.com:-

Steam is a broadband business platform for direct software delivery and content management. At its core, Steam is a distributed file system and shared set of technology components that can be implemented into any software application. With Steam, developers are given integrated tools for direct-content publishing, flexible billing, ensured-version control, anti-cheating, anti-piracy, and more. Steam consumers enjoy the benefit of starting their favorite applications within minutes of confirming their purchase. They can access their applications from any PC. They are no longer challenged to find the latest updates for these applications. And they no longer need to wonder if their device drivers are compatible with the latest software.

Seems to me that Valve want to promote Steam to other developers as a viable means of product distribution. Unless Valve prove that steam can be a successful venture they are unlikely to attract any custom. I would expect that HL2 via steam will be discounted to encourage sales.

I think it will be less. If it costs the same, then less people will download it because they will think "Why pay the same price as the stores and not even get the CD, manual, box, etc??"

I know I wouldn't. I am planning on going thru steam but if it's the same price I will definitely go to the store and buy it.

I would look for it to be $40. Like CZ is $40 in stores but $30 on steam. If they sell it for $40 via steam they will get many, many more downloads IMHO.

Even if you preload, and go buy from the store... all Valve is doing is removing a step for you.... Installation... Go to the store, get your box, pull out the CDkey, put it in, and your version of HL2 (preloaded) is available.

Many people don't understand that. Try opening Steam, opening the "Browse Games" menu, and look in the bottom left. That's how you'll do it.

Remember, buy it from steam will give valve more money for HL3 :).
You see since vivendi makes the disks ships it to the stores etc.. they take some of the profit.
But by steam vivendi in no way takes any profit.

Unless they add a paypal option to steam, I will have to buy retail, but I want to buy through steam, for various reasons.

I will buy through steam, and I bet it's gonna be a few bucks cheaper than it is for a new boxed computer game here in Norway. It usually costs about $60-$70 for a new big title. Maybe around $50 the first week, but I guess it will be sold out everywhere anyway. I usually throw away the box, manual and the lot ... soooo ... Steam it is ! yay!

i reckon that vivendi will makesure valve sell it at retail price or a little under or vivendi would lose a lot of sales if half life 2 was significantly cheaper on steam
