How the hell do I get out of the first stage?

I can't go anywhere? Can't access any doors. I just end up going in circles...Help!

I don't know where it is. It's after I find Barney and he tells me to use the boxes to get out. And once I'm outside, I have no idea where the hell I'm supposed to go. I try to pass the guards, but of course they beat me. Am I suppose to find a weapon somewhere to use on them to get where I need to be going? Thanks.

Aah, the guard that drops a can and asks you to pick it up, mayby? Pick up the can using E and throw it in the trashbin. Or, throw the can at the guard, run in a circle and get around him.

Please read better. He says 'once im outside'; the can thing is not outside.

To topicstarter: You must not shoot the guards yet, you must find a ladder somewhere, near the place where some sort of tank, and guards are standing, and a strider is walking by.

Look for an alley. You may have to climb over a fence to get to it. Or up a fire escape. [vaguely remembers level]

As soon as you exit the station, turn right, and go down the street. It will branch into two - you'll see a bunch of guards guarding the end of the street on the left, and an alley on the right.

Go into the alley and climb up the ladder. Walk across the railing and jump back down on the right side, where the road will branch again. Ignore the citizen being searched, and move onto the right.

It should be fairly straightforward from here.

Outside on the square? If that is it, go right and turn in on the alley on your right and get up the ladder.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I got thru it just like you said. Now I'm entering a new level, at least I think it is. I already passed that alien creature from the train that reved up my HEV suit (I was about to shoot him). Everything's going fine now, thanks!

At first I couldn't hear what the gaurd was saying, so I picked up the can an threw it at the soda machine. Anyway, nothing happened, so I picked up the can again and threw it at the stupid guard! Haha, yeah, he whacked me too, oh well...

Does anyone but me find it really interesting how so many different people get stuck at different parts? HL2 has really showed me the difference in people's play styles. Some people get confused right off the bat, others get it at the end, while others pass up something so obvious it's literally right in front of them, for example, the Air Boat.

Once again, not making fun of anyone, it just amuses me how games play with people.

None taken. I can't believe that was all it took though. I thought it was going to be tricky getting out of there, but if I just stayed closer to the walls and away from the open spaces, I'd probably have found it with no trouble. But, oh well, it's a new game and I thought they'd make things a lot more difficult to get out of the first stage.
