Introduction
This is a beginner’s guide to help you bypass the stage of being labelled as an idiot (and/or lamer). It simply deals with the interaction of you with your fellow forum members. After reading this you will come out a new and intelligent beginner (newbie). One that doesn’t rely on others, one that isn’t recognized as a moron, one who can say they were never as dumb as the next, this will be a new you. Behaviours on forums tend to be the same, so these techniques SHOULD work on all categories. Now sit back, relax, and get ready to learn.
Whenever I jump onto a beginner’s case for not searching the forum, or for asking an idiotic question that makes absolutely no sense, they usually reply with a “buT noUse j00 were a n00b once two, LOL!!!!!!!!”. Perhaps, but I didn’t flaunt it. Nowadays you see every noob and their grandmothers announcing that they are, in fact, newbies. They’re either proud of it or they think it’s going to excuse their erratic behaviour. WRONG. It doesn’t do anything but tell the whole world that they’re a dunce who either
A) Is lazy (Doesn’t want to take the time to search)
B) Is impatient (Doesn’t want to take the time to read)
C) Wants instant hacking (A lamer)
D) Illiterate (Can’t read)
Or
E) All of the above
If you’re more than two of the above then I’m sure you have already announced to everyone that you’re a beginner. That’s okay, because there is always time for change. But you have to be ready for change. You have to want it. If there’s a will there’s a way. You can do it. I’m almost certain you don’t want to be labelled as a dunce, an idiot, a moron, a noob, a lamer, a script kiddie, a retard, or a flow by, do you? If not, then this is the guide for you.
Chapter One
No more AOL talk. In other words, no more shortening sentences into sentence fragments, no more using “LOL”, no more using multiple smiley faces in the same post, no more profanity, and no more poor grammar and punctuation. This is probably the most crucial/hardest part of the rebirth.
When you use poor grammar, punctuation, spelling and use sentence fragments, you get labelled poorly by the people who are reading your posts. People will think you are young and unintelligent, although you may not be young or are possibly very intelligent, they will think otherwise. What people think or you are what will eventually turn into respect or disrespect. If people think highly of you, it either means they have respect for you or they like your style. If people think you’re an idiot (because you use sentence fragments and misspell words) they will usually have little or no respect for you. Respect is a good thing to have in the hacking community. Here are a couple of benefits from being respected
1) People tend to agree with you more. If you have little respect from fellow members, you can count on them going out of their way to build up an argument to belittle you. Which will most likely embarrass you?
2) People will do things for you. If you need something done such as a background check on someone , someone who may respect and look up to you will most likely help you out ( I say most likely because although someone may respect and look up to you, they could still be lazy).
But, if you’re labelled as a moronic noob people will be less likely to help you (I say less likely because sometimes overly friendly members will sometimes feel sorry for you and help you out).
As you can see there are many benefits of being respected. So let’s move along.
The reason you shouldn’t use “LOL!!!!!” is because it simply makes you look like an AOL user. It shows you can’t express your thoughts without using common predefined sayings. This also would tag you as either
A) Young (Older people tend to be looked upon as wiser thus leading people to have more respect for them)
Or
B) Unintelligent (No one likes incompetents.)
As you can tell, you don’t want to be labelled or known as either of those. So avoid the “ Dat wuz so funy..LOL!!!!” and you should be okay for now.
Next, we have the smiley faces. The reason you don’t want to be using the awful smiley face is because it’s very unprofessional and very annoying. Could you imagine writing a letter to congress containing multiple smiley faces? They would laugh in your face. So don’t use them. They shouldn’t be too big of a temptation. If you can’t resist, I suggest you go to a forum that relates to little kids and cartoons. You should be safe there.
Next, we have (which is probably the most controversial) the issue dealing with profanity. The use of profanity can do one of two things to your image.
1) Improve it.
Or
2) Destroy it.
Profanity is the effort of a weak mind trying to express itself forcibly. What most people don’t realize is that profanity is pretty much looked down upon. It shows lack of intelligence, composure, and maturity. Arguments are usually won by the one who practices those good qualities and the one who doesn’t show them, well, loses. There are certain ways you can use it to your advantage to gain character, studying psychology helps you in this area, I don’t suggest trying it though because you will probably ruin your image. But profanity in arguments is always a bad thing. No good can come from it. As I stated earlier, it shows that you have a weak mind, and you try to express yourself by using profanity.
So in conclusion, profanity impresses no one and will simply hurt your social status.
Chapter Two
Be weary of the questions you ask. Try to forbear asking any questions at all. Always use the search engine first. If your question is simply that difficult and you just can’t find the answer anywhere, you may ask.
The way you ask questions is probably the most important part of the image you want to create. If you want to be looked at, at a higher level don’t ask a question like that, because that question could have been answered by a quick two second search and years of reading (half joke, half serious).
Basically don’t ask broad questions, they make you sound like a retard (a bad thing).
Give specific details on what you’re trying to achieve and most people will want to know why. If it’s a legitimate reason, people will more than likely help you out. Don’t try to make up a story. It’s easy to catch someone making up a story, so don’t try.
Chapter Three
Word choice is a very important factor in determining your successfulness of your forum life. An extensive vocabulary is something you might want to have. It helps you sound more sophisticated (even if you’re not) and people respect sophisticated people. For example, would you respect someone if they said something like:
A) “Shut the **** up you ****ing dick ****er, I be knowin what the **** I is talking about”
Or
B) “Your lack of intelligence simply hurts my brain. You haven’t the slightest idea what the hell you’re talking about, so stop acting like it.”
As you can see, the sentence that uses the proper sentence structure and syntax beats out the one that does not. In the B statement you may have noticed that I broke one of my rules, the no profanity rule. Although I broke it, the way in which I used the word “hell”, simply accommodates the rest of my grammatically correct sentence, which, in this case, is acceptable. A lot of “smaller” words aren’t proficient enough to explain an idea completely. Therefore knowing slightly bigger words will help you out on your journey to become sophisticated. Not only sophisticated but respected.
[_-Note-_] Forum Geeks tend to have more respect for the ones who have abnormally large vocabularies.
I’ve witnessed a couple of incidents where the “noob” is a female. Females try to use their real world flirting techniques on the forums to try and get information without searching or trying things before hand. For example, they will use words such as “Honey” or “Sugar” or “Baby” to try and flaunt their female ways to seduce men into spoon feeding them the information they need. This is very annoying and only the weak minded fall for it (men who don‘t get out much).
If you’re a female, this is a big NO! NO! People get pissed off with this, plus letting everyone know that you’re a female will get all of the geeks who are too afraid to interact with women in the real world, flirting with you, which is annoying to others who aren’t geeks and who actually have real world girlfriends. Not only that, its common knowledge that females are less respected than males. So if you want respect, don’t declare your sexuality, unless you plan on lying or if your name is Axient.
