Hi! I started this thread so that maybe people w/ dumbass fathers (like mine) can get ideas on how to get them to let you upgrade your PC for the upcoming Half-Life 2. Please start posting your ideas/experiences for us. My scenario is: I need to upgrade my Mobo so i can get an AGP grafix card, but i dunno if my dad will say yes, or when is the right time to ask him. I'm going to pay for it upfront and do the install by myself, and if it doesnt work after 1 RMA sequence, i'll give up and put the old rig back together... any suggestions?

NOTE: i didn't make this topic to include mothers cause in most cases, they don't care, but you're welcome to post about moms as well

I'm so glad not be a teenager anymore :)

I'm my own man! Woot if I want to upgrade I'll work for it. Maybe you should too you lazy fat bastard! lol :D

If you pay for it yourself and can do all the work i dont see why your dad would have a problem with it.

he thinks i break everything when in reality i'm better at computers that his tech guy at work, but just the fact i'm paying for it might work.

BTW, Evo, i have a job... but i still have a dad, and i'm in his sucky house

Well since I pay for it myself, my parents don't say anything. But instead they give me "the look". And that's even worse.

i'd rather have him let me do it and give me "the look", but i know exactly what you mean by when they give u "the look", but if i have my computer, i'm a happy man

My dad is the one who showed me computers when I was about six. I'm seventeen now (since last friday) and I have held a job for about four months now. Excluding all the other crap I bought I have about 1500 set aside for a new comp. My dad keeps up with current hardware and games (although he doesn't play many) so he knows what I need to play newer games and such so he really doesn't care.

ur lucky.... my dad is into cars and lumber and thinks his 266 mhz labtop is fantastic

hunter are you sure we arent brothers? lol. my dad is like that too.

neither has mine, that doesent mean he cant hate them though.

my dad thinks i break everything i touch, but he lets me do whatever i want to my computer anyway, though he likes to debate me on the usefulness of it all

I saved up money and biult my own, you should too, then they cant tell you what to do.

errr. they're his parents and have every legal right to restrict the use of his money.

Unfortunately ...untill hes 18....they can.

Im lucky.....my dads always been a computer nerd ..even if he doesnt keep up with all the latest hardware.

So I never had a problem buying computer stuff.

I know how you feel. My dead feels like my comp right now is super fast and i dont need to upgrade and spend money. Besides, he doesn't like me playing comp games anyways, but i pay for it, he should let me....

^^ I was reading your post, skimming as usual and I read "dead dad" for some reason... I was shocked but then my eyes uploaded the correct info to my brain. I think I have to enable V-sync on my eyes :)

I don't have a dad so i'll bugger around with my computer all I want, pwnage.

mwahaha! So glad I'm not a kid anymore. Well, not legally anyway ;)

But my parents have always respected my decision if I wanted to buy some thing with my own money. All except for guns, they would not let me get a softair gun.. This kid in my neighbourhood that was like 3 years younger then me even got one. Also I was the last one to get a Nintendo! Man, being a kid sucked!

if you earn the money, then you cant spend it as you wish, if they restrict the use of your money say by taking it off you this would surely constitute as theft.

nah, they're parents, they don't need any reasons to do stuff

BTW, it's just my dad, i've been talking to my mom about this for weeks and we're trying to find a way to convince him to let me upgrade

actually when you are legally dependent on your parents they technically have possession of everything you own/make.

i'm now guessing that he'll say yes cause i've been doing a crapload of chores (the house is practically chrome :p) and it's MY money so... i now see no reason for him to say no

Ive basically have gotten 2 full computers off my dad, he use to know nothing about computers, i GOT HIM INTO IT, now he loves computers, and the idea of them, so he gladly supports the "hobby"
- moral of story, make ur dad part of the fun, somehow get him into it, make a connect between one of his other hobbies or something.

my dads a computer technician, and has been for the last 20-30 years or so(I'm 17)
