How to get "the patch"?

I went looking through threads for info on how to download it, and i launched steam and the game. I am not seeing this update.

anyone? I keep relaunching steam and i can not get it to update or say anything about updating.

It downloads automatically when you start Steam.. It's very small, you probably missed it. to check if something has been downloaded recently, check the "monitor" menu in Steam.

checked it. Nothing there. it was set for past 5 minutes, I changed it to past day and still nothing.

It downloads very fast and doesn't appear in Steam's monitor.

You can check to see if it added something to your machine, though.

Go to Options-->Keyboard-->Advanced and switch on the console. Press the key to the top left of your keyboard, next to 1 to bring the console up.

Start to type in "mat_forcetextureintohardware" and if you see the full word appear below then HL2 knows what you are about to type, so you have the patch. If it doesn't appear as you type the word, then you don't have the patch.

Don't complete the word or hit return, just quit the console.

I'll bet you'll find it's there.

Makes things a lot worse for some. (It does help at least a few...but most reports I've heard are AWFUL...).

The patch has done bad things to HL2 for me. Crashes, far worse stuttering, major harddrive performance weirdness, etc. It was okay before.

The patch was so quick that people didn't notice it but some of them were trying to tell me last night that there was no patch and I'm like, oh really?

yep, steam didnt download the patch

basically all it does is enable the mat_forcetexturesinhardware command

which does shit all


I'd return my copy of HL2 if I hadnt thrown out the reciept like an idiot

Ok i did get it. I am noticing a lot of stuttering now, im not sure if it because i have hit the scenes with alot of water, or because of the patch.
