A six-year-old Los Gatos girl whose hand was severed in a very unusual accident was recovering Monday, and may regain motion in her reattached hand, thanks in part to quick help from a passer-by.

Erica Rix was playing with a jump rope in the back of her mother's car two weeks ago when the end of the rope, fluttering out the window, caught on the car's axle. A loop of the rope tightened around the girl's wrist, slicing off her hand.

"I heard a thunk and thought, 'What was that?' " her mother Allison Rix, 32, told the San Francisco Chronicle Sunday.

With her daughter screaming in pain, Allison Rix pulled over the car over and went to her aid. She was shocked at what she found.

Jim Bailey, of Saratoga, was driving by when he saw the girl's mother calling hysterically for help. He made a tourniquet put of his belt to slow the blood flow from the wound. Another driver called emergency services.

Meanwhile, another motorist -- Gail Andrews -- located the girl's hand in the street, with the jump rope still wrapped around it, and stood in front of the severed limb to prevent other cars from running over it, the paper reported.

I'm partial to the hands off approach to jump rope

she had a hand in her own hand removal

that's a handy way to call attention to yourself

hands down the worst way to lose a hand

"oh you're not so handy now are you?"

I gotta hand it to you for getting all those puns out of the way first.

Took me a while to fully understand what actually happened...

It only takes minutes to bleed to death with an injury like that. Good thing there were people there to give her a hand.

Well, hand hand handhand hand, hand hand foot.

you and the girl in the article have something in common: she now shares your nickname

She's the greatest magician I've ever heard of! Making body parts disappear, that takes a master of sleight-of-hand.

It takes a lot of hands for sex!

.........Wait a second.

Her mom should have left the window up, that would have been the right thing to do.

There's only one way to handle this situation, hand her a lollipop and she'll shake your HAND AHAH

She'll have a handsome set of scars from the reattachment.

That game of jump rope cost her an arm and a leg.

She threw her cards down, but she had a bad hand.

The guy who wrapped the tourniquet deserves a hand.

Let's not lose sight of the topic at hand. This must be very hard for a child to handle.

It said with a jump rope, not necessarily playing the actual game jump rope, as in jumping over a spinning rope, while in a car.

her classmates were playing EXTREME Jump Rope (razor wire) ..she's lucky she wasnt decapitated

Yeah I totally missed the with... Makes for a COMPLETELY different story!

Now that is ****ed up. Sounds like something from a horror movie, a la necktie in a blender or something.

necessary pun: I suppose the jumprope had a hand in it. haha. hahaha. hahahHAHAHA.

Poor Girl, but atleast another car didnt run over her severed hand, so it was able to be reattached
:D

Wow this thread is nearly all puns.

Anyways...that would totally suck to have happen. Imagine looking back and seeing that your daughter has no ****ing hand and blood is gushing from the stump. I wouldn't want to be the person that had to pick her hand up from the road.

Indeed, but her mom had her hands full with the task of driving.

oh god, so much laughter from the puns.

But seriously, I would be traumatized if I were that mother. Holy ****. I feel really bad for the little girl :(. You can tell, because I havent made a hand pun yet.

True. I've got to hand it to you guys, some pretty good ones in here.

I feel sad about it too. I see events as they unfold, from the victims eyes. Do you guys have that ability? Like

I see her, in the car, with her mother in the front seat. She is on the left side. It's a very bright and sunny day and the windows are down. They are on the highway and a tractor-trailer had just passed. Traffic isn't bad this time of day. She is a little black girl and she is sitting on white upholstery in a 4 door car. The seats are a little dirty with crumbs of spilled food, but not too bad.

Her mother has dark hair and it's tied up in the back. The daughter decides to dangle the jump rope out of the window and watch it go in the breeze. It reminded her of a TV show she once saw. She was playing. She thought she was being clever by tying the other end around her hand so even if she let go, she wouldn't lose her new jump rope.

The rest is too gruesome.

I envisioned it white rope with red spiral and red handles, but now that you ask me to go back through it, it may have been neon yellow and plastic, not rope.

I haven't read the story yet. I can't sleep, so I think I will.
