Hi
i was in a server yesterday and this guy had a 56k and his ping was 30! and i was like WTF and he said that he used a program called accelerate or sumthing and i was wondering if that was possable?

does anyone know how i could make my ping that low.
i got 56k and my ping is 140-150

and dont say "oh get broadband etc" bcos i cant get it bcos its not in my area.. and dont say "move" because i dont think moving just for broadband is worth it and im happy where i am.

depends what server u play on, setting 'rate' commands to lower or higher, but sure which way though. and BT are aiming to get about 97% of britain to get broadband coverage within the next year or so

Actually he probably just lived very very close to the server or was foolin wit ya.

Now im a 56ker to. I use a rate of 5,000.

The guy was obviously lying, there is no way on earth you can get a 30 ping on 56k, And even if he was next door to the game server, that would'nt help unless he was making a direct connection to the server via network, Since the guys connection would first connect to his ISP then through any number of other servers (hops) and then to the game server.
I was on 56k for over 5 years, since the days of Quake 1, anyways, and knew every trick in the book for lowering my 56k ping, The lowest I saw ever, was about 90, and that was exceptional, 110 - 140 being the norm.
You need broadband or DSL to get a 30 ping, Even with my ISDN, the lowest I've seen on one 64k channel was about 59, and that was on a Jolt.co.uk server a few nights ago, with only 6 other players.

If you can't get BB where you live, You could probably get ISDN, Most ISP's only support one channel (they use local calls for 128k connection).
Expect to pay about £79 or so to convert your phoneline to ISDN (or BT home highway), then you pay £25 rental per month and another £15 or so a month to an ISP of your choice.
Its expensive, Yes, But if you can't get BB, its your next best choice.
Expect downloads speeds of between 7-10kb/s (one channel), connection in 4 seconds, instead of the 20-30 seconds from a modem,
And pings to most UK servers of between 60-100.

Also anyone on 56k, Having a "rate" in most fps games of anything over 2500, will cause Lag, Since your PC is then requesting more data from the game server than your connection can handle.
The settings I use, And these have had a drastic effect on my online game play are....
rate 3000
cl_rate 5000 (default is 10,000) ,,If your on 56k, you could try setting this to 4000, But this setting(as I understand it) is associated with server side bullet prediction, So if you have crap accuracy with the weapons, then you should leave this at default, But if you know you have a good aim, then 56k'ers should try 4000.

oki so rate 3000
and cl_rate 4000

anything else?
cl_cmdrate?
cl_updaterate?

also tell me all your tricks to get a ping of 100 :D please

Ya what should Cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate be?

my ping is normaly 130-180 mostly stays around the 140-150 area

how i do this?
the modem i use is
Zoom V92 PCI Voice faxmodem

i used tuneup uttilites internet optimizer then i used
webroot accelerate 2k3

have no spyware/adware or viruses installed.

i normaly keep my rates too
rate 2500
cl_cmdrate 40
cl_updaterate 30

i put everything on low even turned my DX lvl down to 70.
its ment to be on dx9 but i herd putting everything to low will help.

a 130 ping on 56K? No way... it cant even be possible unless the server is like less than 200 ft away from you. I had dialup and it had an approximate speed of 48 kbs. The best ping ive ever gotten was 160. And that was a server with 0 people in it. I just dont see how you could get a 130 ping with 56k.

seriously im not bullshiting you i have had 125 before. it stayed like that for like 20 min then it went up to 140

and yes its true.

look i was looking at the screen shots and here is my ping on one server. its not 130 but its still good.

Well as for cmdrate and updaterate, mine are currently on default, Until I get a bit more info about what exactly the do.
The logistics of optimising for 56k are immense, But there are several things you can try.
Don't bother with Internet optimisers, they might help for increasing download rate, but that won't help your ping, it may even increase it.

When I played the early CS beta's, while most of my mates connected on 56k at about 46, - 56k/s, I was connected at 38k, Connection speed is no guarentee of low ping.
One of the best modems for getting low pings is the old Rockwell HCF 56k speakerphone modems, Since rockwell kinda died a few years ago and became Conexant. Its still possible to get some good conexant modems.

Try www.driversguide.com for drivers, register for free, then search for your modem.
I'm afraid that getting a low ping is trial and error with drivers, The latest drivers are not necessarely going to be the ones that give you the lowest ping, Even back in 2000, I was still using 1998 drivers, since after testing over 50 rockwell drivers for my win 98 install, the 1998 ones gave the lowest pings and least lag.

Try going into device manager, modem properties, advanced and uncheck the box marked "use error control", this setting is used for when too much data is passed to your modem which results in errors, your modem then spends vital seconds, re-downloading the data, this results in lag, Not so important when your surfing the net, but terrible in games.

Next in device manager, open up the "com 1 & com 2" tabs (they may or may not be availlable), and increase the top selection to "115,200" and change the bottom selection (flow control) to "hardware", then click advanced, and make sure both "sliders" are set to maximum.

Have the modem cable from your PC to the phone socket as short as possible. If possible get new wire installed. It will reduce your 'lag spikes' considerably. If your cable is old it's most likely to be slow.

Also try reading this link below for additonal advice about how to lower your ping on 56k. (scroll down to bottom of page)

Also do a search on google for 56k modem optimisation for games.
there are hundreds of sites out there.
Good Luck!

is U.S. Robotics good?
I personally love there modems.

I had dialup and it had an approximate speed of 48 kbs.

nah... u can't be serious... are u sure you don't mean 4.8kb/s. coz thats what i used to get with 56k

Unless it was a mega compressed file. Anyway best way to make your dialup faster, is to upgrade to cable :)

What he meant was he connects at 48k which is 48,000 Kilo-bits a second, therefore he connects at 48 k/bytes, Of course the download rate is one eighth of that, approx' 6kb's download rate.
