How to manage your own Server

Hey guys,

i wonder if thats just me, but i cant name my server, as well as password protect it.

I know, the password can be set via console, but i wonder if theres anyway to get the gui for it up, since its a featrue used in mp games for years now, and you shouldnt need to get into the console for it.

if youre wondering what i talk about, cause you have a gui for that already, heres what i get:

i click "create server" and i get a window where i can select one of the 2 maps, or random map. than theres another tab where you can set such things as max frag count and stuff. but theres no field for server name, password, max players and stuff.

sooo how can i set it up? i mean, there must be a better way than either set it via console or starting a dedicated one for your own and then joining it.

any ideas welcome!

cheers!
Argo

yeah, thats similar to that what i get when starting a dedicated server - but when i want to start a non-dedicated im not able to see those fields... did you change any of the cfg files to enable it or was it visible from start?

I'd also like to know the answer to this. I tried the little HL2DM settings mod done by AndyB of VoodooExtreme, and while it gives you extended options for hosting, the servers don't appear in the server list anyway, like the servers aren't broadcasting. Also I see some servers in the list that say they're dedicated servers, but I don't see a dedicated server exe, so how's that possible?

Seems remarkably little information available on how to host HL2DM games  I'm guessing most of you guys are trying stuff that worked in CS:S and finding it works in HL2DM too, but for the guys who don't already know this stuff - a little help please.

sounds interesting, this hl2dm fix! where did you get it? does it unlock those "hidden features" in the MP menu?

This small mod adds extra options to the 'Create Server' menu in the excellent Half-Life 2 Deathmatch. With the included files you can launch a server with password, modified player numbers, and with cheats to spawn in extra objects if you wish.

To install, copy our modified settings.scr into C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\[email protected]\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp\cfg, making sure to keep a backup of the original.

Additionally, if you wish to have a modified 'Message of the Day' please copy our motd.txt into C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\[email protected]\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp, and then modify the text with your favourite editor.

Enjoy the added options for this excellent game!

DISCLAIMER: By using the modified files neither of the creators can be held accountable for any damage caused to your game or computer equipment, as unlikely as that is.

yeah, thats exactly what i need!

is there any non-fileplanet link to it? well ill do a search for it. thx!!

Anyone have any theories about why my server wouldn't show up in the server list? My mate tried hosting and his wouldn't show up either. Nothing to do with the filters, they were all off, as were firewalls.

Cheers

I had a couple problems trying to run a server even after forwarding all my ports and such.
The server always loaded locally, Here is what helped me:
sv_lan 0

you can set things like that in a file called game.cfg inside the cfg folder within the hl2dm directory.

Yeah right here... it is zipped. Place this file at the following location. (BACKUP the Original)

C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\YOUREMAIL\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp\cfg

why do we still get this!
rcon_address IP:port then rcon_password password
then rcon command
or use www.hlsw.net's hlsw thingy

well i dont think typing in commands into a console is comfortable, while all other mp games have a fine GUI for it, thats why youre still getting this.

i mean, its 2004, and you shouldnt need to edit a cfg file to actually be able to name your server. and you shouldnt need to search the net for tools to get such server stuff done. thats pretty lame imo.

thx for the constructive replies anyway, but i think ill wait for valve to finally implement it into the gui before i continue to play hl2dm! :)

I agree with Argonaut, it should be easier to set up a quick server with all settings visible.

Anyone know how to set time limit and frag limit in dedicated server then?

hope thay make a half-life 2 runner with some awesome setings ....i used to love useing sof2 runner
