How can I remove dust from the innards of my PC without killing it?

buy a can of compressed air ..if you're too cheap to do that, get yourself an inner tube of a tire, fill with air, point towards pc, let out air

Righty-ho.

Unplug it from the mains. Open the side of your case. Clean.

I take off all the fans and clean them with a soft, fine clean paint brush and use the same brush to lightly clean the motherboard and the bottom of the case.

Just don't tip the air can. Don't want moisture to spray out. If ya do by accident then let it dry before flipping the ON switch.

I tend to take the approach that would probably horrify most people. I use a vacuum cleaner to suck the dust out. This isn't quite as daft as it sounds. I use the thin plastic nozzle on an adjustable power machine with the power setting low (the setting used for curtains). Carefully position the nozzle without touching or banging the components to remove the dust. I take a similar approach to Baserape> and use a paint brush to loosen the dirt in order to suck it out.

The biggest risk to touching the innards is static electricity, not physical contact. I haven't come across anything in a PC case so far that can't take cleaning. Just make sure to discharge any static before hand.

You are better off leaving the computer plugged into the mains but switched off at the wall. This way the computer and case are earthed and you can get rid of static by simply touching the case. (Note I am in the UK where we have 3 pin plugs, not sure if all countries use 3 pin with an earth wire)

If you do decide to use this method BE VERY CAREFUL!

Compressed air works the best, saves the hassle of trying to wipe the dust away. ;)

compressed air ftw

fact: tipping it upside down and spraying your hand is stupid, did that a few years back...almost got frostbite

I can never clean my heat sink on my cpu. I dont want to remove it as well.

I think it's easy to clean most heatsinks. Just remove the fan. The dust is usually matted on top the heatsink so I just peal it off like lint in a drier filter.

Yeah that's what I do, then I see all that crap in between them

they're like $3-4 here at walmart :p

Sigh.. I have been gone for so long, that all of my tech posts have gone bye-bye. I had a nice Guide about getting rid of Dust Bunnies from inside your PC... I really should have made that list and then had the admin Sticky it like he asked me to.

Should I repost them or no? After all, 99.99% of you here are "Experts" and therefor have no need of my guides.. j/k :p

P.S. I have found that a ShopVac works good too, on blow that is.
