i definitely feel sympathetic towards the guy
but i think he needs to get out more
find some other way to vent all that frustration

Good on him, he makes a valid point. Not so eloquently though.

He does need to get out more

Holy shit... Never seen anybody so angry over copy protection like that before.

Holy hell he's 25? Get out more, g'damn.

Said the chorus of HL2.netters, their combined postcount on a video game forum being in the high twelve thousands.

LOL

And this "outside" you speak of is overrated tbh.

Said the single HL2.netter, his postcount singularly being higher than theirs combined.

Says me... who has an even more ridiculously high one. :(

Anyways, I do feel the guy's pain somewhat.

Bought Silent Hunter 3 and got bombarded with all sorts of crazy shit.

Distorted sound, the disabling of my CD-ROM drive, which I have yet to fix, and the game wouldn't start randomly.

Good thing Ubi got their shit together when enough people cried out.

C'mon, he's just acting, he could've said what he wanted way more calmly.

Valid point, though.

Every word of it is true, although presented a little noobishly.

Unfortunately Ubisoft already made their $30 out of this poor sucker so they're laughing all the way to the bank. The shortsightedness of companies when it comes to stuff like this is astounding, however, since they haven't hindered software pirates in the slightest but this is an example of how they have turned legitimate consumers against them and their product.

PC gaming is pretty user unfriendly in the first place, what with having to put a gaming rig together and fight continually against obsolescence; every one of my friends is a gamer, and owns a PC, but not one of them plays games regularly on the PC because they haven't a clue how how to keep up to date with the hardware. Loads of clueless consumers have heard of the Xbox 360, Wii or PS3, but most people wouldn't know an 8800GTX if it bit them in the arse. It's easy to forget that on a gaming forum where everyone instantly knows what you're talking about.

On top of this, shitty DRM is the straw that can break the camel's back in many cases. The guy who posted this vid might have come off as a little nubtastic, but at least he knew about potential conflicts with Daemon and Nero, and he knew where to go for his crack - the average consumer, like the gaming dad on his Dell, wouldn't have a ****ing clue. The more savvy consumer, even if they are posed few problems by the DRM, is often made to feel insulted and abused by Securom/etc. installations that take control of their computer out of their own hands.

This is why it pisses me off when PC devs whine about piracy. It's not the piracy itself that damages PC gaming more, but the paranoid overreactions to it. The Nintendo DS is being pirated silly, but is still managing to sell fine. PS1 games were also pirated shitless, but I've heard people argue that it actually helped extend that console's life past it's obsolescence, since people could pick up a cheap PS1 and then a compendium of bootlegged games from their mate's dodgy dad, or whatever. Piracy is never going to go away and its effect is impossible to measure, but at least here and now we could do something about the average consumer getting treated like a shit-caked moron.

Edit - just check some of the comments to see the effect of all this:

I got the same message. I just gave up.

I've seen this guy's "games that suck" series.

They're pretty meh to be honest.

He has a great point in this vid, though.

he looks like the type of guy that might shoot up a school or something . . .
kinda scaring me

He's angry, but he's right. Shitty DRM only hurts the consumer, pirates get away scott free and nothing is solved. GG making the PC an even more user-unfriendly platform.
