According to a Yahoo News story, half of the world's human population is infected with Toxoplasma, a parasite shown to alter the brain function of rats, inducing them into behavior that benefits the parasite but is suicidal for the rat. So what affect does it have on humans? Article comes complete with Heinlein 'Puppet Masters' reference. I call dibs on using Toxoplasma as a name for my rock band.
SOURCE / Thanks tGB.

(If someone's posted this already I'm sorry. I searched for 'toxoplasma' 'parasite' and 'brain'.)

As with anything that happens, Short Recoil will save us.

They have known about this for ages. No worrys.

/me runs out infront of car

sure the emo people is the more infected right?

I think this is particularly relevant on a half-life website. It's probably an alien invasion or something.

We're all standing in this thread...but some of you aren't human. I know I'm human - but I don't know about you. So we're going to do a little blood test...

'Am i the only f**king professional here! We all know we need to cut off the head or destroy the brain'

Or maybe it's why Conservatives act the way they do.

OOH, WIT

Yes, let's all catagorise people and make generalisations.

Maybe that's why hl2.net forum goers act the way they do.

Ha-ha-ha

Maybe that's why YOUR MUM acts the way she does!

edit: I'm sorry, was that too predictable? :(

Leave our mum out of this!

Half the world, maybe (ranges from 30-60%)... but estimates of US cases are more like 20% of the population, IIRC. Even then, the number of "infected" people that actually show noticeable symptoms is small and generally occurs in either pregnant women or people with weakened immune systems. In the rest of the cases, there hasn't been a discernable need for treatment since the immune system generally prevents it from doing anything serious. As for the mental effects, they seem to be quite mild. There is supposedly a slight slowing of reaction times. It's generally thought to somewhat increase the risk of schizophrenia and/or bipolar disorder. There are even claims that women are more promiscuous and display signs of higher intelligence after being infected... whereas men are thought to become more antisocial. So, it's not a huge deal to begin with (it's not like rats, where they're attracted to their predators) and it's treatable.

Wait... I just blacked out for a few minutes. What happened?

Hey! I didn't say that!

OMG... they come with built-in propaganda!

1. How do we know it's not just the beginning?
2. How do we know you're not infected too? D:

edit: lol, beaten

That is quite freaky. There's no way to get rid of the parasites, and you can get a blood test to determine if you have it.

Parasites such as that, and malaria, etc ought to be wiped out.

it makes women more promiscuous? then why the heck are we complaining about this bug?

Good thing Vortigaunts have a natural immunity to brain parisites.
What John? MORE vunerable? SHIT SHIT SHIT!
I wish I had a nose so I could pull this damn thig out
*enters surgery*

Good god.

When the entire world is infected, and the overlords from space come, they'll have mastered our immediate surrender...

Oh so that's why the French always surrender :p

You know, I really don't want to know if I have these. In the odd chance I do, and there's nothing you can do about it, that would be disturbing beyond belief. Also, that puppetmaster quote was way beyond melodramatic in the context.

Well the thing is, it dosn't get any worse unless you hammer your immune system and if you are fine with the way you are now and you have got it, whats the problem?
