I've just finished reading this trilogy series. I have not read a fictional book in nine years. It was given to me by a coworker who insisted I read it. I can say I am happy that I did.
Really, this book is targeted at young adults, and I normally associate that with easy reading and relatively shallow and one sided plots and characters. Color me surprised when this book has easily propped itself up as the best series I've ever read, although it's in an admittedly short list of fictional works. Easy to read, but a story of a dystopian future so compelling I quickly knocked out all three books... me, the horrifically slow reader who only really ever reads technical books and has a very short attention span. Oh and by the way, before you think otherwise, the book is not likely to be too similar other books that share the same rough premise, such as Battle Royale. I didn't even know the premise of this book going in, as I started it blindly. Best way to do so I think.
I hear they're making a movie about the series now, even doing casting, but I doubt any movie will ever be able to capture even a fraction of what I've read and felt as I've gone through the series.
You guys should check it out. Don't dismiss it as teenage/young adult fare. And despite the reputation it has as being best for female audiences, I really didn't see that at all in the story. If you really think it's bad after you finish it or have already gone through it, I'd love to know... but please put it in spoilers.
