South Korean video game company Webzen Inc. on Tuesday said it struck a deal in which Microsoft Corp.'s newly acquired Massive Inc. advertising unit will place promotions in two of its upcoming titles.

The ad deal, which is a first for online game maker Webzen, marks Massive's entry into the Asian market, the companies said. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Games included in the deal are "Huxley," set for release next year, and "All Points Bulletin," due in 2008. Those titles, which are set in virtual urban environments, are so-called massively multiplayer online games that can support thousands of players at once.

But advertising will make them seem more real!
lol.......

I completely agree with ya.

If it made subscriptions cheaper and service better, and it fit into the landscape, then I wouldn't really mind.

If it makes the game cheaper than most mmorpgs I wouldn't object.

I doubt it will (I have no proof) ...I think if this were WoW ya most definately but I think developers may use that extra cash not to save the consumer money but rather to keep them afloat because the more MMO's there are the less players there are to play your game ..WoW being the exception

I don't mind ads in the form of billboards, TV ads, posters, etc (like we see in real life) but if it's anything but a proper fit into the game then I say..."shitty."

*Walks into a MMORPG with a sword at hand, the best armor in the game.....*
*Turns to the right*
*BUY A TOASTER!!! ONLY $14.99 IF YOU ACT NOW!!!*
Omg I can't wait!

I always liked the fake ads that developers would put in games as they were usually funny and clever and contained in-jokes, but for some reason the idea of real ads being there bothers the heck out of me!

How utterly lame. MMORPGs are a soulless enough experience without ads for viagra popping up. If this idea is a goer it won't be long before it makes it into other types of games as well - looks like Left Behind was a trailblazer. I won't be buying any of it.

I'd actually prefer the billboards and products in the game to be real products. For example you walk by a soda machine and it says, "super-cola" or "coku-cola". I'd rather they just use the real thing. "coca-cola"

However, if they are talking pop-up adds and add banners on my screen while I'm playing they can get ****ing bent. No way..

That's ok in a games like the Tom Clancy games. But imagine walking through the post-apocalyptic world of Huxley and seeing and a sign that says "The Da Vinci Code: Now in theaters!" I mean, WTF? It will make the game look really stupid. In fact, I doubt the game will contain any actual cities as we know them, so why should they include actual ads? Advertisements are slowly creeping into every aspect of our lives, not only do we see them on TV and online, or hear them on the radio (which is necessary to keep them free), now they try to embed themselves on our computers and barrage us with popups and send our personal information to companies. And they are appearing in a game we will have to pay $50 and a monthly fee for. And it's not just an idiotic god-boy game like Left Behind, it's a high-profile Unreal Engine 3 game.

i can't wait for salesman npc's.

meh, i won't mind, as long as it's minimal and blends in [to an extent], like el fuhrer said, i don't want these huge flashy signs in the way when i'm shooting some alien or whatever.

If they're just like ads on broken billboards lying around, not something stupid like a perfectly lit and conditioned billboard in a ruined city, then it might look ok.
Also, if it's like a splash screen where you HAVE to view the add before you play/load a section of the map then that would suck greatly.
Lowering the price would be cool, but i agree with stern. I don't see it getting cheaper.

I wouldn't mind if a) they fit it correctly, in context, into the game (I.e. you'd have old coke ads with numbers that work, or addresses that work, or say billboards advertising services that are worn and chipped and faded) b) it reduces pay-per-month price. But i doubt it.

/pizza anyone? Seriously ads are not they way to make a good mmo. It's been demonstrated in the Warrock thread. The way to make a good mmo is to make it free and offer extras that cost money.

I see enough advertising as it is per day, I don't like them invading my gaming experience.

they do this in planetside, in the spaceport, there are little adds above the doors, last time i played it was dentenye ice gum
