After reading the article at gamespot about hl2 development, I saw Gabe say that the team could crank out 3 hours of solid gameplay a month in early 2004. So wouldn't it be sweet if we get like montly episodes of hl2 saga. Stories from different perspectives or even short stories. Omg that would be soooo cool. This would of course only be possible because of steam. Heck I would pay $10 a month to valve for 3-4 hrs of new gameplay every month. I really hope they explore this idea of making hl2 like a tv series.

Oh yeah, nothing I want more than to be playing the same game for months upon months upon months

they have pretty much said this is their plan...

I agree Kouch.

New content coming out every month would be awesome! I'd definitely get a subscription to Steam if they did this.

not the same game. Same premise and same universe. Common all tv series depend on this. Shows like x-files etc. Go on for years. It would indeed be interesting.

I'd rather pay one-off for an expansion every 6 months or so..

I still play HL and CS. So essentially I have been playing the same game for years upon years upon years

Nobody says you have to play it. As the mod community showed, people were MORE than willing to play Half-Life mods and addons YEARS after the original game was released. Addons straight from Valve? Even better.

I'd like to get a bit more out of my $10.

Keep in mind, $10 is what most devs see for a sale of a full game. Just as long as VALVe is making good money, I hope they use the power of steam to provide excellent value.

I just used $10 as the max I would pay. Even better if it was free

Thats not going to happen. :) $5 I would gladly pay. $10 a little more reservedly (unless there was even more content)

same :)
but u know what? i have paid alot money to own all these Valve titles so i think a few "episodes" as pple here are referring to them wouldn't be such a bad idea...especially in terms of "thanking the loyal customers" who pretty much have 90% of all Valve titles.

It would be cool if you could pay once, and then get 2 or 3 of these things. then after that, if you're still interested just pay individually, like with Xbox Live

Regardless of whatever you say - steam could bring about the biggest industrial revolution. Maybe, when more developers start using this concept - we might staright away download complete games from dev's site, instead of moving the lazy ass from the seat and buy from retail.

amen

buying from retail in my view is what gaming actually means TO ME.
I don't buy games i admit it. I do the "wrong" thing because I have parents who believe that games are a waste of time and the reason why I am getting 80-somethings instead of 90-somethings. I was brought up to be smart and well, they won't settle for anything else. They are also stubborn and belive that the root of evil and undersucseeding is the number of hours spent through my entertainment. So when I do want a game badly enough I save enough money, and go out and buy it. I don't yet have a credit card and even if I did I still wouldnt be able to buy Half-Life 2 off "Steam". Mostly because parents would look over each bill and see what I buy.

I love buying games, their boxes are cool for display on my shelf, and those awesome awesome CD's! oh plenty!

People are too lazy nowadays to buy things. STEAM is revolutionary, its also incompatiable, how many mac users use steam? Also the friends feature has yet to work for me ONCE. They could at least intergrate it as one program and not opening a number of windows for everything you want to do, I find myself closing 3-4 steam windows before playing a game. We need a feature to close this AUTOMATICALLY! Also, steam requires an INTERNET connection to download games and update them. Last time I checked, not everyone has internet. You need a fast enough internet to download these games as well as play them. I mean WHATTEHFORK! I want to pop in my cd and play my game but NOOO first I need to go into steam, close a couple more windows and (very soon in the future) close some advertisements for upcoming games and then find my game among a confusing list of whats avaliable to me and whats greyed out and not avaliable to me. and if I accidentally click on a greyed out one I get another window pop up asking me to BUY IT! So I try to use my "friends" feature to contact people to help me out and nooo I can't cause the friends server is currently out or somehow magically I cannot connect. I give up. Also what if the freaking steam management and servers all SHUT DOWN AT THE SAME TIME. Huh? oh no! I can't play half life 2 because I CAN'T SIGN IN! GOSH I wanted to play the single player campaign too! Last time I checked, single player doesn't need an INTERNET CONNECTION!

nonetheless I havent gotten used to it. I still want my CD's Back, I have 4 drives I can still play it when I like. I don't mind switching CD's now and then.

"its also incompatiable, how many mac users use steam?"
Uh... how many mac users play HL period? HL isn't available on a mac. Why would steam be?

Never mind, read the rest of your post. It's ALL misinformed. There's not even a point in starting to comment on it because you obviously don't care for bothersome things like facts.

IAmElephant is just a random asshole, please ignore him :)

Anyway, Steam is a very good concept. I wonder how many developers will have platforms of their own in the near future?

I wouldnt be surprised if they release a few episodes for free. They released tons and tons of free stuff over the years for HL1 (uplink demo, tfc, new hldm maps, new cs maps, new dod maps, deathmatch clasic, richochet)

You only need one window open to start a game. Either, right-click on the Steam icon in the systray, go to play games, and double-click a game, or, right-click on the Steam systray icon, servers, choose a server. That's all you need.

Although, If you can propose a way of downloading games without using the Internet, I'm sure everyone would be glad to hear it.

If you don't want the occasional message about games coming soon on Steam, there's an option in Settings to turn them off. And if you don't like windows, stop opening them. And the play games list is fairly easy to understand. If it's under "My Games" then it's yours.
and if I accidentally click on a greyed out one I get another window pop up asking me to BUY IT!
If it's greyed out, it's yours but not installed. So it'd be asking you if you want to install it, not buy it.

I have to say the Play games section on steam is abit err shit. It does need to be abit more organised like not calling it Play games. I mean the SDK isnt exactly a game and neither were the vids when they were on awhile ago. Plus if you have alot of mods installed it be better if they were on a list under Half life using somin like those + - things you get, i dunno what there called.

They've never said the extra episodes would be anything but free. :)

Steam is not a good idea...yet.
True, although it certainly isn't a BAD idea today, but to get to a point where it is a good idea someone needs to take the plunge.
