I just installed the "full cache" Steam program, and whenever I try to create an account, it says it can't connect to the steam network. And then I close and reopen Steam, and then it can't connect to the network to give me the login screen.

Any help?

Are you running a firewall such as Zonealarm or the built in XP one?

If so, you'll need to open up some ports so Steam can communicate with the content servers. Go to the FAQ at http://www.steampowered.com/faq.htm for details.

Hope that helps.

Well I turned off the XP firewalls, but that did nothing. I have Norton Antivirus running though, is that a problem usually?

right now it's seems that the auth server is down..
it is not possible to create an account or login..
John Cook at steam is "looking in to it" after i noticed him 10 min ago..
could be hopefully fixed soon.

I think you have to log-off and re-connect before the firewall is removed. I wouldn't recommend that as a permanent solution though, not with all the Windows RPC flaws at the moment. Check it works and then just open up the ports you need.

Don't think Norton is any problem.

Hang on, I can't connect at the moment either! Maybe theres something wrong with the servers. Aggh, thanks Vakuum. Disregard everything i've said and switch your firewall back on.
