recently bought half life 2 at target and it didnt come with a cd key . target wont take it back because it is now opened wat can i do??:(

They must have tot ake it back if it didnt have a CD key.

Did you make that known? Or are you looking in the wrong place for the cdkey?

Whelp I finally broke down and went out to buy HL2 from Best Buy today. I noticed their only 2 copies looked a little beat up but didn't see the harm. When I got home I noticed the box's seal was broken and inside the paper CD sleeve for CD 1 was missing. Thinking not too much of, especially since I never intended to play Online, I went ahead and Installed it all. After installation it kept pulling up the damn Steam Online menu. I became more than a little PO'd and searched Online for a reason. Found these forums where I learned I had to register. That is when I realized I hadn't seen a CD-Key in the box.

Let me guess..... the CD Key is written on the paper sleeve for CD-1? This added to the 20 mother f'ing times I had to go through the 1 page account creation for these forums because the anti-hack/spam security string of lopsided letters is UNREADABLE!!!!!!!!!!!! makes me a little upset. It seems like the only people hurt by these companies' attempts at security are those of us who pay for their crap.

I can only hope Best Buy will let me exhange one copy for another. Why the hell do PC Game boxes have one piece of tape securing them when the average DVD take an hour to open with a blowtorch?

Because gamers aren't very strong?

Did you ask them if its possible to have an exchange item? Thats usually what you can do in your position, you could say the disc is defective, and you can have it exchanged for a brand spanking new one. Off course before you taking out the store, check the box to see if the CD key is in it, then you can make it known that their stock is defective because of this problem

true dat about pc boxes...but then again, more people are prob trying to rip off dvds/console games than pc games...

Well once you pick up the box you can really tell if that box was open or not by how the security tape looks and how the area where security tape supposed to strap is ripped.
I once bought Iron Storm (freaking Horrible Game) from Best Buy and the security tape was actually dangling from the box. I didn't think much about it till I paid for the game and went home to find out a whole CD is missing. When I came back to Best Buy they started asking me lots of smart ass questions like I'm gonna need one CD and game. Finally my principles and egos came to play and I told them am gonna take them to small claims and the game is not even the point anymore. That's when they called the BigBoss. BigBoss apologized and gave me a new game.
Since then I always make sure, double freaking check that this thing is sealed as a virgin and no one touched before I walk out the door with it.

Good luck.
