I don't know why, but lately i've had some tremendous cravings for a really good real time strategy. I usually don't like them that much, but for some strange reason i've had the desire to search and search for one that might catch my interest, along the same lines of RTS games such as the Age of Empires games, which I absolutely loved.

Just can't seem to find anything that seems appealing though, and its frusterating!

Suggestions anyone? Throw some names by me!

Starcraft - Rome:TW - Warcraft 3
Starcraft is the cheapest of the bunch. $20 for it and its expansion.
Huge online community(Battle.net reachs 100,000 just for starcraft alone. Usually its like around 40,000).
Made in 1998, pleasing graphics. 3 totally diffrent races while at the same time being damn near all diffrent in everypossible way. I guess the only thing that makes one alike another is that you build stuff.
It's huge in korea.
Then the UMS is sure to have something you HAVE TO LOVE. Like I loved diplomacy. Most diplomacys were a europe map where you try and kill everyone else and make alliances. Sounds like your average thing right? You get more income via getting more beacons(Well cities). The thing is that you do not know who else your ally is allied to. Your ally over there could be an ally to someone who you just attacked and relized your gonna get pwned. You call for help he wont(though he could).

Then there are other things like Civilizations(Like diplomacys but you tech up through ages). Tons and I mean literally TONS of defences out there. Bounds(Super Fun!). Rpg's. You cannot imagine what the community has made in the years.

Starcraft has an insane array of maps. It's graphics are just perfect to take on a concept of mideval, modern, and futuristic looks while at the same time being very pleasing to the eye.

I own starcraft, the total war series(love them, craving something more old fashioned at the moment), age of empires series, warcraft series(all of them), age of mythology, and several more. Thinking of trying starcraft and age of mythology again soon, hoping to quench some of my thirst. Its been years since I played starcraft, and never played age of mythology much(have it and expansion).

Then the UMS is sure to have something you HAVE TO LOVE. Like I loved diplomacy.

What do you mean by UMS?

Maybe check out Dawn of War?

Along with Rome: Total War, this is the best rts i've played in a while.

Believe me, I know about Rome. It's my favorite RTS game. Heh. Been a fan of the series since shogun.

Dawn of War is indeed good, so it the Battle for Middle Earth but only online (its not fun to play against the computer plain and simple).

Another great game but old is Warhammer: Dark Omen, I think it was released in 1996 or something. Have yet played a better RTS though.

Dark Omen was great :)

An update would be welcome.

(although, i'd really like a straight conversion from table top to pc. All the units, choice of terrain etc. Choose what point size each army will be, set them up, and battle it out online \o/)

if you've outplayed the classics like Starcraft and AOE, then get Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.

That would rule! Should keep it real time though becouse to what I have seen turn based table top games tend to be bad when they are moved straight to a computer.

I dunno - the games are excellent, if they were done well it would be great on the pc.

It is old, but I really recomend Total Annihilation. It's a truely under-rated old school game that is packed with HOURS of fun online and offline.

It must be really cheap by now and I can easilly get lost in it for an hour or two just on one skirmish map as you can build MASSIVE armies loads of defenses and have an all out war.

Defintely worth getting, if you do make sure you download all the latest patches and a decent units pack from somewhere like

http://www.planetannihilation.com/files/ or http://www.tauniverse.com/

Screens can be found here: http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=total+annihilation&num=50&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&sa=N&tab=wi

I recommend Age of Mythology with the Titans expansion. Excellent game with lots of replayability. Plus the graphics are fantastic.

That's what i'm leaning towards the most at the moment, until I reacquire my star craft from my cousins, whom I let borrow, at which point i'll probably play both.

I would recommend something like UFO:Aftermath.

Granted it isn't traditional RTS but its still cool. :P

Check out http://www.heartsofiron2.com

It's a real-time strategy game of the world during WW2. No 3d graphics, though. Don't know if you'd miss them. I don't and I'm almost addicted. It's even cheaper than most games today.

You could try something like Ground Control 2, but rent it, it's not worth buying. Gets kinda dull and lacks character, if you know what I mean. Otherwise pretty nice.

I've also heard Rome: Total War is great.

If you're into Star Wars, Galactic Battlegrounds is a fun game. Uses the Age of Empires engine I think. Gamespot has a preview of a brand new Star Wars RTS coming out later in the year that looks awesome. That will be my next RTS i think.
