I have with good intentions bought hl2 off steam (with niggling thoughts that this might be a bad idea). Now i am downloading it for the 3rd time :frown: . Because i keep getting a "map expected error". So a download seems to fix it until i get further on in the game. So seeing as this game doesnt work properly through steam i demand a cd/dvd verison sent to me as i want to play it!!!

Will the relevant person at valve or whoever ships the game
email me at [email protected]

I suggest everyone else posts below who wants a copy that works.

Did you by any chance read the Eula and conditions of use when buying from steam /

I'm just pointing out you have nada chance.

Why not just delete the problem file and run steam again
should fix it.

a) this isnt the valve boards

b) you signed an agreement when you bought your game through steam saying that you understand you do not get, and will not be entitle to a physical copy

c) haha you're an asshat

A bit uncharitable I have to say.

I thought about buying from steam and then dismissed the idea. Not because I think its a particularly bad idea, its just that (1) I'm always shagging up my PC and reinstalling stuff and (2) I like the look of the game boxes on my shelf.

The Steam EULA basically gives them the legal right to rape you and then force you to have an abortion while simultaneously forcing you to watch gay monkey porn. If they haven't come over to your house to beat you on a whim, you got off light. :dork:

a) Why don't you post something usefull?
b) This forum is halflife 2 related right?
c) Dumbass!

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I have the DVD version and the game won't start for me either. Been fighting with it for the whole day. Everything indicates the game is ready to play but it still won't start.

Good luck on getting support through official channels as well. Valve has dropped off the face of the planet and hasn't been heard from regarding any of the problems that people are having. Sierra/Vivendi actually tell you they can't help you because the game is too new if you call them and actually locate a living person through their phone menus. Steam forums are too busy or down. I sent an online support request per Vivendi's support rep's suggestion and that's gone off into the ether (though to be fair it's been less than 24 hours since I sent the request). I'm expecting I won't be playing this game for a long time - if at all.

jimboc I'm in the same boat with you...I purchased the collectors dvd version, installed it, authenticated it, etc, just to receive the message "no disc inserted" each time I try to play the game. I have no idea how to fix this and finding help is nearly impossible as of yet.

P.S. for those of you wondering, yes the disc IS in there... :monkee:

when you download the game IMMEADATLY "BACKUP" all hl2 files to 4 cd's or 1 dvd

right click hit properties and right below delete is backup

you now have a Cd/DVD install disc

BEWARE back up takes a while

im actually having a problem too i cant believe after 5 yrs valve couldnt just get HL2 to WORK
