I figured out why Gabe doesn't post here anymore

I don't need to worship GABE like most of you people do. And I noticed the same thing the guy who started this thread did. They are pretty dumb. The posts move slower. Did you see the way gabe looked when he was at E3. He was a stuttering sweaty mess.

He prolly is a MAJOR shut in. Like a lot of us are. Blah blah blah ...just filling in time till I buy there game and bugger the hell off.

The thing is, these "consequences" don't affect Valve anyway. They'll sell plenty of copies of HL2, no matter how much complaining there is on a forum. All these "consequences" achieve, is getting people worked up, and filling forums with abusive posts. If you object to the way Valve operates, by all means protest by not buying the game, but we'll just see how effective such a protest is.

Thing is, it's not safe to operate on that assumption.

What if Half-Life 2 actually sucks? Well, not only did you treat the community like crap, but your game blew. Are people gonna be so forgiving when HL3 comes around?

we (hl2 uber-fans) probably make up less than 5% of the overall HL2 audience ..we really wouldnt effect sales all that much ...we're talking sales in the thousands when they're shooting for sales in the millions ...they can afford to screw up every now and then

If the game sucks, no amount of community butt kissing prior to release will make it a guaranteed commercial success. If the game is good, it will sell extremely well. If it's not, the hype will lead to a decent number of sales, but not longevity of sales. Basically, the opinions of some disgruntled forum posters is not going to determine whether or not the game is successful. The quality of the game is. Valve are clearly more concerned with the quality of their game than appeasing fans who are angry at them.

And once again, I really don't think Valve are treating the community like crap. Their PR could be better, sure, but what we have here are quite a few fans so anxious to play the game, their impatience has translated into anger.

When you think about it, anyone who cares enough about HL2 to be angry with Valve is borderline obsessed with it anyway, and is almost guaranteed to buy it.

I knew this one was coming. You paid for an ATI card, you got a free HL2 voucher. You have paid nothing to valve, see my previous post. ATI can get pissed off (They paid for your copy) but not you.

Link, please read the post first. You're arguing the same point I'm making. What I said in my post was that I got my copy through an ATI purchase, and I don't expect anything from Valve except to let me play the game.

Sickmind first off, that was good. I really think you're a courageous person for voicing your opinion / thoughts to us. However think about it like this.. Gabe may be a liar, hey we all do it time to time..Some lies being more important then others, in gabes case, a friggin Computer Game?.. Nobody's blaming you for Valve's mistakes, but rather for the harsh words in your first post, I think. I can certainly understand your concern, having spent money on a system just for HL2, but that's a risk you took. Unforseable things happen all the time, you need to be able to deal with them. How would you be reacting if Valve shut down all together, resulting in the cancellation of HL2? While that would be unlikely, the risk is still there, and needs to be acknowleged when you make a purchase like you did.

Regardless of what you may think, id has managed to churn out fun games again and again. Not necessarily revolutionary or deep, but just plain old fun.

This goes for both you and CptStern. The irritation with Valve exists outside of this forum as well. I've seen it on practically every board. I've heard it from many people. But it's not the disgruntled fans I'm talking about.

I'm talking about hindsight. I point you to Daikatana. That game was in development for a good long time, going through an engine change and repeated delays. It parallels HL2 in the sense that everybody's willing to give the game multiple chances in the hopes of everything turning out okay in the end. The result? Daikatana sucks after everybody patiently waited for years. Although Romero & Co. never stayed around for another game, do you think the world would have been as patient a second time?

Hindsight. The development and treatment of the community may not mean much to you now, but it will hit hard and ring loud if HL2 steps out of the opening doors and breaks its legs while heading down the stairs.

Here's where I disagree with you. When you lie to the community, or break your promises every time you make them, and don't bother giving out the kind of specific information the community wants when the game is so close to shipping, then I think you are treating the community like dirt. I highly doubt that's their intention. I'm convinced that they're just a bunch of guys that can't get their crap together. But that still doesn't change the fact that the nice community that helped make them the successful developers they are is being left out in the cold. You would think that a developer with such a large and nurturing fanbase would keep their mouths shut until all plans were solid. Yeah, yeah, they're not obligated to give us diddly-squat. But it would have been appreciated.
