I just wanted to share. It's exactly the gun I wanted and was worth the wait and $. It made it to the FFL/dealer the same day my first son was born but I obviously didn't pick it up then as my son is WAY more important. I had money set back for it when I ordered it.

It is a "Rock River Arms Elite Commando" 5" 1911. I specified no front cocking serrations, 30lpi checkered front strap, 30lpi main spring housing, Heinie Slant Pro rear sight with tritium capsule insert, dovetail front sight with tritium capsule insert, and Black T finish. I also specified how I snug I wanted the bushing fit. I added a pair of "VZ Black Paper Micarta Operator" grips. The Blac T finish added $200 but it is teflon based so it has a natural lubricity to it making it more reliable if ran without lube than a parkerized or blued gun would run dry. I would never not use some grease or oil though.

Custom 1911's are expensive but for a reason. Every part is hand fitted by a professional pistol smith. The parts are made only from bar stock steel or forgings so they will not wear or break any where near as fast as cast or m.i.m. parts found in many production 1911's. Rock River Arms guarantees this particular model will shoot 10-shot 2.5" groups at 50yds. That is phenomenally accurate for a pistol. They use Federal Gold Medal Match Semi-Wad Cutters for this. The test target included has a 10-shot 2.25" group. There's know way I can shoot like that but it is nice knowing what it can do in the right hands. Also they are designed to run reliably with Semi-Wad Cutter bullets which is about the hardest shape of bullet to have a gun reliably feed. As a result it can eat just about any bullet shape or type I throw at it.

Anyways it is more than I could have hoped for. It cost right at $2k with the Black T finish and VZ grips. I decided I'd rather have quality over quantity and sold half my pistol collection to pay for most of it. I just wanted to share. Here she is:

I blacked out the serial# in the pic in case anyone was wondering what the black box is. I don't really like flashing the serial #'s on the net.

Thats really nice, I'm going with a glock or that when I become of age. I'm going to be a carrying mofo.

Glocks are great guns. I don't personally like them much because of the grip angle and trigger system, but that's just preference and obviously doesn't mean much. They are plenty accurate for a service gun and very reliable.

1911's really are my favorite platform. The problem is so many companies make them now and the cheaper ones are crap with very lax specs. It gives the 1911 platform a bad rep in the reliability department. Most of the time you have to be willing to shell out good money to get one that is properly fit and is completely reliable. Now I am not saying you have to shell out $2k to get this, but many people are turned off by their cheap Rock Island Armory or Llama 1911 clones made in the philippines. They require more fitting and skill to produce a quality one.

I have a carry permit. I plan to carry this in the winter when my attire allows concealability of a full size pistol. The remainder of the year I carry my SA XD subcompact worked on by Canyon Creek.

Wow, gun AND son in the same week

I like my Ak-47. Sorry guys. :P

I like mine too, but it doesn't hold a candle to my 2 Rock River AR-15's. Luckily they are not so costly like their 1911's. They won an FBI contract to make 10,000 AR's for the DEA in the last year so that speaks of their quality.

Got my pistol back today (serial is blacked out on mine too)

blah, posession of fire arms never made sense to me unless you are millitary, just seems to stir up more shit. I know this isin't a thread for peacemongers like me but I just cant see myself ever owning a firearm if I had children.

lmao @ murray.

I have firearms for both recreation and security. I keep them in a 600lb gun vault bolted to the concrete foundation from the inside which takes a 6-digit code. My carry gun is either on me, in my safe, or in my nightstand when I am asleep. When he starts walking I'll definately get a small electronic lock box that takes a 5- digit code to set on my nightstand for when I am in bed. It's unlikely he could come across it in my sleep but it's not a risk I want to take.

Hollywood makes people think that only bad things result from civilian ownership of guns. It is a completely ignorant view that is only harmful to societies understanding of an inanimate object.

Gun safe doubles as time out corner.

That's beautiful man. Real beautiful. I've got a vintage 1911 straight from WW2 sitting in Nevada.

I'd love to have a WW2 era 1911 :). They only go up in vaule.

How much did your FFL charge for transfer due to internet order shipping to him and transfer to you? I'm worried my transaction is going to be steep but I need to talk to them first and I want to know if I'm getting ripped or not on that fee. :P

Huge fan of the 1911, definately a great gun but i wasn't aware that there was such huge differences in quality. The gun doesn't look beautiful, being just plain black, but it definately is a gun i would love to fire.

And 1911's are indeed lovely. Very strong, very reliable and very beautiful ;) (I've always wanted to get my hands on a SWAT one :O once)

Use this FFL locator: http://gunbroker.com/User/DealerNetwork.asp

You just enter your zip im and it gives a list of FFL's in your area and the transfer fee they charge. The guy I use only charges $10 per gun. In my area the average price is $25 but it can really vary a bit depending on where you live. Some FFL's insist that they order it for you and then mark it up a certain percentage. The guy I use just gives me several copies of his FFL to send out if I want to buy anything. I just email him if anything is shipping his way.

There are such differences in quality because of all the companies that make them. You can get lucky and get a $300 Rock Island Armory that works great or unlucky with a custom gun that needs a little tuning. Generally you get what you pay for. The 1911's used in WW2 and Vietnam were made alot looser. The trend today is to make everything super tight for accuracy. The tighter specs just cause lots of problems if everything is not perfect. Smith and Wesson started making 1911's a couple of years ago. Their line seems to be a good reliable gun for the money. I think they are about $650 new for a base model. Alternatively the Springfield Mil Spec line or WW2 Repro are great base guns. They would be my pick if I wanted a platform to start with and customize over time. I think a they are $450-$500. They are very basic but made very well. I have been mostly lucky with my 1911's but I have had to have a few tinkered on by smiths to get one thing or another resolved. I don't mind as long as it's niot major and is resolved cheaply.

if someone breaks into your house in the middle of the night, you wont be able to open it on time. If you have one within reach you're putting your family at risk ..you have a baby now ..in another year or so you wont be able to always keep an eye on him ..they get into everything.

That's why I don't run around the house with my finger on the trigger. I will only shoot an intruder if I can identify they are not one of my own. I have a very powerful flashlight for night time. There is no way I would shoot at something I could not see. If I lived alone I wouldn't care but I don't. I would only putting my family at risk if I refused to take measures to be able to protect them if the need arised. Also like I stated before I will get a small steel electronic box that sits on my nightstand to have one within reach when my son starts walking, and it will only stay in there at night. They even make ones that open up with your fingerprint instead of a keypad combo.

Why does every thread that has guns as a subject have to turn into a debate? I would have posted it in the politics section if that is what I had intended.

Why didn't you go for the canvas micarta? grippier :p

I've never tried either canvas or paper micarta. I like the way these looked and they feel great. I think they will do just fine especially since the msh and front strap are checkered.

I was raised with firearms in the house. When I was old enough I was trained how to handle them responsibly. There is a way to be responsible with children and firearms.

Thanks a million :). I wasn't aware Kingman had so many complete ammo and firearm shops. I only knew of two. Going to have to take a day to check all these little hidden away places out and see what they have got to offer.

no there's not ..not one person here will be able to convince me or any parent that a firearm that's not behind lock and key is safe

cool from a collector's stand point i guess, but thats one crazy culture from a european perspective, escalation and easier ways of killing people ftl!

If a parent can't handle having a firearm and a child in the house they shouldn't have it that way, simple as that.

Nice 45 mate, i prefer functional black finishes like that i can't stand chrome/s/s unless it's in a brushed finish.
5 more years and the 1911a1 is a 100 year old design.

What, you mean 2011?

Why anyone would need a firearm is beyond me, but have fun. :)

I like the chrome gun metal on the barrel and then a black finish on the handle :).
