I found a cool feature in hl2

I don't mean to spoil the game and I'm not trying to show the leaked content of hl2. Honestly, I downloaded the beta, but I just want to see whether my computer can handle it.

I correctly install everything, I have all the correct files of the beta and I know the correct procedure to load the maps. However, my computer can't load any map of the hl2 beta, whenever i try to load a map, it says: "CModelLoader::Map_IsValid: No such map 'e3_lab_dx60' map load failed: e3_lab_dx60 not found or invalid".

The reasons I can't load any map are that all the maps in hl2 beta are dx9 or 8 only and that my videocard doesn't support dx9 and dx8 features. When i try to load maps, hl2 beta will load the dx6 maps which are missing in the beta.
See it says No such map 'e3_lab_dx60', notice dx60 at the end. I concluded that the full version half life 2 will have specific sets of maps for different types of videocards. If u have one of those high end card, hl2 will load the dx9 maps. If u unfortunatly have a low end card like me, hl2 is still playable for you and it will just load the dx6 maps.

Maybe this isn't really a news. Don't flame me.

If I lucky enough to have Gabe here to read my post, I would like to tell him the following:
Hi Gabe and the whole valve team, don't worry, the leaked thing won't borther your sell, I will buy half life 2 for sure.

Interesting, having seperate maps for different levels of vid cards would be neat.

It's a universal scaling system for differently-abled direct x version cards. Glad I got me a AIW 9800 Pro :)

yea but that would mean some maps would have good details, and other like hl1 basicly -_-

why would they pin it on people that downloaded the leak......?

do you think they want to lose even more money by going after hardcore fans? Who couldnt wait to get there hands on the game.....

they dont want to alienate themselves from the community and they sure as hell dont want the pay the legal costs........

thats publicity they want to avoid right now

Why should he get nailed? With your ideology in mind every teenager in fifty states would be prosecuted for having downloaded Britney Spears/ Eminem mp3s off of Kazaa. Punish those responsible for the leak...not those who acquire it.

EDIT: I phrased that kinda funky. Prosecute those who hacked Valve, not those who got it from IRC/ Bitorrent etc.

My conclusion from the beta is the games pretty much done.

Models are done, speech is done, musics done, guis done, physics done, vehicles done - the only thing that doesnt seem complete is the levels.

I think they might be testing the maps on diffrent levels of dx to optimize the level and hence the reason for there uncomplete status, or it might just be beta :p

There are a few DX6 maps in the beta. Not many though.

Also, the beta is really, really buggy. It's a lot like the Alpha of Doom 3 that was swiped from E3. Most of the maps are incomplete and some are missing entire sections. There are a few textures and models missing from the beta as well. In fact there are really only 2 stages that are completely playable (the beach stages where you get to drive a dune buggy and the prison stage). All the other stages are missing some AI or models to make them work properly. All the e3 stages will only work if you do exactly the right thing at the right time.

So for any of you worried that this was the "complete" game, stop worrying. The beta is highly unlikely to affect Valve's bottomline with respect to HL2's sales.

Framerate is really good for a game with these kind of FX too. Very nice. I'll be snapping it up whenever it finally ships.

I'm sorry for typing too much in my post, some people don't get what i mean by "cool feature" right away. I was basically saying that the final version of hl2 will have specific sets of maps for different levels of videocards. A set of maps for dx6, a set of maps for dx9, etc. They are geographically exactly the same maps, but with different levels of grahpical features. If u have to play hl2 on a low end machine, u will be fine, u will be able to run the game. Ain't it a cool feature ??

Knowingly recieving or acquiring stolen property is no better than stealing it yourself.

The only reason few teenagers haven't been prosecuted for Kazaa is that it's a giant hassle for little reward to go after little people. But that doesn't mean what they do is all right. Thread after thread here we have people blithely confessing to crimes and perpetrating something they know hurts the community, making up lame ad hoc explanations afterwards to justify it. Just wanted to see if your computer would run it? Give me a break. You can find that out when the benchmark or the game comes out, just the same, and you know it.

At least when I used to leech mp3s, I didn't pretend there was some sort of grand purpose other than personal greed that justified doing it.

the dx6 map have name like this one 'e3_lab_dx60'. if it doesn't have dx60, it's not a dx6 map.

My bad. There's only the one. I thought I saw at least three or four there. I haven't tested this one BTW so I don't know how well it works.

As i said yestoday, every single videogame in the history get hacked, cracked, leaked, iso, warez, gamez....none of them is exception. The demand for illegal freewarez is so huge out there, far more than just a few teenagers. Just go check daily number of visitors in some bitorrent sites, far greater than the one in the official game sites. What's wrong with the system, what's the error??? The error is human, the human nature is greedy and unwilling to work. We try to possess the most with the least of working. We enjoy free stuff and we hate working, that's why we have invented machines, automatic stuff, computers and every thing else what ease our work. I know many people out there working hard, but they are forced to work hard, otherwise they won't get nothing.
