I never had an issue with cleaning before, nor would I worry about touching something that may be dirty (e.g. door handle) and then touching food, except in a bathroom. (see foot flushing)

So I'm sitting in my allergist's waiting room before getting a shot and I decide to read an article about germs and whether or not people should be cleaning as much as they do. Long story short...clean your ****ing stuff.

After finishing the article I started using hand sanitizer twice as much and I'm constantly thinking about the last thing I touched before eating food. That's fine and all, I like to be clean, but days later I got horribly sick and spiked a fever. I puked a total of 11 times over a period of 4-5 hours Friday night. At one point I was completely naked on the bathroom floor covered by a small towel barely able to breathe as I pulled a few muscles and my diaphragm was terrible sore.

That should have told me "look, you're going to get sick no matter what, just use precaution to the point where it doesn't interfere with your life"....but no, I can't be logical. I can't get this stuff out of my head and I'm worried my easily susceptible mind will become a prisoner of this obsession.

anyone else have a near similar mindset?

Also, you wouldn't believe the amount of feces on a typical desktop keyboard D:

I can either clean my stuff... or you can boost your immune system.

Eh, whatever. Our immune system is pretty damn robust, and most germs are killed before they can effect us. I just shower once a day and wash my hands whenever i'm in the restroom. Good enough I says.

Your immune system shortens your life (the more it has to fight, the shorter your life), so, I'll take my chances with a weaker immune system by keeping my hands clean. After every immune system battle, the dead just clog shit up, and they remain there.

Why the hell were you naked on the bathroom floor?

I'm imagining a montage of you right now vomiting. Some parts you're puking in different angles and then the last one you're naked, laying down and possibly crying.

I would like to see the percentage of nude vs. fully clothed vomiting. I would bet that it's closer than you think.

lol, probably should have clarified...I was about to take a bath because I was freezing cold and could barely stand without blowing chunks. I was in the tub for about 3 minutes before I had to blow.

Uhh... If you have a good, strong immune system, it doesn't have to expend itself greatly while warding off harm. Your logic seems entirely flawed to me. A "weaker" immune system will leave you more vulnerable in life... because when you get in contact with things that can bypass your weaker immune system, your body has to fight them... and it makes your weaker immune system a worthless immune system.

I'll take my chances with a strong immune system thank you very much. Being exposed constantly to germs isn't the way to develop a strong immune system.

I have a bigger problem with vomiting, which led to my fear of stomach illnesses for some years.

Interesting, but you're missing the point. If you aren't exposed to large quantities of germs, you don't have to fight hard. An easy victory and an over-active immune system isn't required. With billions of germ strains, surely we can't have a solution for each on-hand.

So you are suggesting you just touch all the public door knobs and then put your hand in your mouth later? You could just not expose yourself to significant quantities of germs in the first place, like me.

This sounds like you are suggesting I do this. The opposite is true actually. It also sounds contrary to what you said you wanted to do. Could you explain that? Maybe a typo?

If you have an over-active immune system and nothing to fight then it'll have the same effect. Better to have it and not need it.

However, if in the chance you do catch something bad(which is going to happen no matter how careful you are), it's good to have a strong immune system.

Right - I think. Because you have an immunity to 1 particular germ doesn't mean your immune system is stronger than mine. Mine could be just as strong if not better, just not towards that particular strain.

Smokers and old people have weaker immune systems, for example, though they could have an immunity to something I don't.

That's what vaccinations are for. To strengthen your immune system against common strains of certain viruses.

Immunity is truly awesome. Imagine, a deadly germ that you are completely unaffected by!

Like some of those black people and malaria.

You never know what quantities of germs you will be exposed to. The cleanest of areas can be filthy and you not even knowing it... and what you perceive as dirty areas could be relatively clean.

That's why the responsibility needs to be up to you to keep your immune system working in strong, good order... and not have to rely on other people cleaning their stuff. Yes... other people SHOULD clean their stuff... because being clean is good. My comment was a complete joke.

But still, the responsibility is on you, since it is your body.

Nowhere did I make that suggestion. That's a foolish thing to do. If you're worried you touched something that is ridden with germs that could compromise your immune system, you need to wash your hands. And you should always wash your hands before you put your fingers in your mouth.

This sounds like you are suggesting I do this. The opposite is true actually. It also sounds contrary to what you said you wanted to do. Could you explain that? Maybe a typo?

My original post was pretty much a joke... and I thought it was pretty obvious. But if it wasn't... sorry. You want to keep a strong immune system. You want it as strong as you can get it. And you accomplish this by maintaining proper health with nutrition and exercise.

My immune system is equipped with the biological equivalent of fully automatic military assault rifles, with night vision and laser scopes. And we have recently acquired phosphorous grenades, cluster bombs and anti personnel fragmentation mines.

So, when my white blood cells are on patrol reconnoitering my blood stream seeking out strangers and other undesirables, and if they see any, ANY, suspicious looking germs of any kind, THEY DON'T. ****. AROUND. They whip out the weapons, they wax the mother****er and deposit the unlucky fellow directly into my colon! Into my colon. There's no nonsense! There's no miranda warning, there's none of that three strikes and your out bullshit. First defense, BAM! Into the colon you go!

I miss him so much :(

Sterilizing your hands and skin can often have the opposite effect that it is intended too. Just like your stomach, your skin has a natural bacterial flora that is your first defence. These harmless bacteria that normally reside there basically take up all of the nutrients and prevent other new bacteria from setting up shop. Every time you sanitize your hands, you are basically wiping out everything. Unless you have a compromised immune system, or you know that you will be exposed to a high level of bad germs, I don't think regular sterilization is a good idea. It will leave you more exposed in the long run.

If you are saying you don't wash your hands after you shit and piss, you can go **** yourself, I hate people who don't wash their hands after they shit and piss.

I don't think I've ever used hand sanitizer. I just use hand soap in bathrooms and kitchens and stuff.

It's terrible shaking hands with somebody who just recently used hand sanitizer and their hand is all wet and slimy because it hasn't been absorbed into their skin yet. Feels like you're shaking hands with somebody who is oozing sweat from the pores on their fingers.

Why did I think the first line of Raziaar's sig was part of the discussion... >.>

I keep a mini-bottle of hand sanitizer in my car. After I take my trash to the dump, I use some. After I'm finished shopping at the grocery store, I use some. I always wash my hands when I get home. I also wash my hands after handling things like raw eggs and after using the restroom.

The best way to maintain your immune system is to make sure you get enough sleep.

Enjoy your allergies.

I'm not allergic to anything but pollen as far as I know - but it's not severe, just an irritant. I didn't grow up like this though. When I was a kid I hated washing my hands.

The point is, you can control your hands... you can't typically control your lungs in your typical environment.

My Dad beat his allergy to nuts by eating just a very very small amount here and there over many years. Something like that, I'll have to ask him how long it took.

*Grabs a handful of Pollen and eats it*

This idea is PERFECT.

*Choke*

You gotta wash it down with water.

Nah, Paul Mooney is funny as hell.

A friend of mine was allergic to chocolate, but he used to just take anti-histimines and then eat it because he liked it so much. He's fine eating it now.

Isn't eating honey very good for strengthin' yer defenses against allergies?

surprisingly enough that doesnt work with fat chicks

I seriously thought that VirusType started this and then I was like "WTF, Tyguy?"

Pretty much, this.

Although I fine with touching my dirty mouse and keyboard and then grabbing a chocolate bar. Which is what I'm doing while typing this.
