Hey guys

Im new here and bought the game yesterday, I have had problems ever since i started, but i wont bore you. Right now when i run the game it shows the loading screen and then it goes back to the desktop and says:

Engine Error

failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer.

These are the specs for my laptop:

Mobility Radeon 9200
32 Mb ram for the display
512 Mb ram
1.5ghz
DirectX9.0c

can anyone please help me????

First thing is always to make sure you have the latest drivers (video card, chipset, etc.) and service pack 2 for Windows XP. Get the latest catalyst drivers from ATI's website. Looks like you're already running the latest version of DirectX. Make sure you have a minimum of other applications running in background.

If you're still having trouble, type your error message into google. Perhaps someone else has already had the same problem and found out what to do.

No offense, but your laptop sucks, especially for gaming. Even if you do get to run it, it'll look horrible.

thx for the quick reply, im testing all the things now, i will let u know what happens

Oh man. You know thats not a gaming rig. Still, you should be able to get it to run. With mobility chips, the Omega drivers are better. These are third party drivers designed to give laptop GPUs the functionality of real GPUs (but you still wont have the preformance).

Get the ATi Omega Drivers here: http://www.omegadrivers.net/

i can already tell you what'll happen, about 12fps.
I think he'll get better then that,.. on low settings. Maybe 30fps. With a lot of that crappy LCD blurring.

yah i know, i agree, my laptop sucks, it was free what can i say

ok then

do i really need to have SP2??

oh sorry, as i said, im new

why do i need omega drivers though??

sgoutam: Notice the "EDIT" button at the bottom of your posts.

Posting several times in a row when you can simply edit a pre-existing one is really bad etiquette.

I'm sure you dont need SP2. Get the Omega drivers like I suggested.

No, you don't need SP2. I'm not using it.

hey shens

i tried all those things, but still getting that error

hmmm...

Go to Play Games -> right click Half-Life 2 -> Properties -> Launch Options

and type in -dxlevel 70

Half Life 2 will kill your laptop anyway you'll get about 5-10fps, I think. If you hate your life because a game won't work you may have slight problems.

?

i was looking thru the steem settings u told me and it says status: requires update. whats this??

how do i update it

how do i update it

Click on HL2.

im sorry, can u pls go thru step by step what to do. i am just a little retarted tonight

Right click Half-Life 2, go to Properties, and under 'Automatic Updates' make sure it's set to 'always keep this game up to date'. If it wasn't set to that, set it to that, and restart Steam. If it still refuses to update, reboot your computer, keep restarting Steam till it does. Steam is retarded sometimes.

thx, cause thats what i was wondering, says it updates when i restart steam which i have done loads of times and still says requires update

Is it set to 'always keep this game up to date'? what number does it show beside 'amount acquired'? 99 %?

OK, right click the Steam tray icon and go to "Monitor", does it show it updating any games?
by the way whats your internet connection, dialup or cable/dsl? if you're on dialup it will take a long time to update (all night, probably).

edit: forgot the 'monitor' part :p

i am using cable, how do i check that it is updating anything?
