Just tried to install and play an ol' game of mine, and find to my dismay that nVidia has decided to have absolutely no 8-bit support in their drivers, which means I can't run the game.

Now, my question is, are there any sort of custom nVidia drivers that maybe could re-implement 8-bit support?

I have checked the specifications of my GPU (XFX GeForce 7900GT 256MB) and it does hardware wise have the ability to support 8-bit DirectDraw surfaces etc, but the drivers don't.. This affects atleast 3 games I own(I can't play them) and it buggs the hell out of me, if anyone knows if there is a solution, please tell.

Otherwise I guess it will be time to go for an ATI GPU next year..

Are you sure something like Dosbox can't compensate for stuff like that? Perhaps through code injection or something? A shot in the dark, but a shot nonetheless.

It's a Windows 9x game so I doubt DOSBox will do any good, and I know for a fact people have gotten it to work under XP, but not with the GeForce 7xxx series because nVidia doesn't have 8-bit D3D support in the drivers for them.

Heck I even googled it and there were several large topics on nVidia requesting the implementation of it, but nVidia haven't even replied to those threads.

You might want to give tweaked drivers from one of the below sites a try. I'm not sure if they will help you, but they might. Which game BTW are you trying to run? I have posted your question on another site I post at. If I get an answer, i'll pass it on to you.

It is caused by the fact that no Nvidia forceware drivers beyond 66.93 have support for 8-bit 3D

Yeah, I sitll can't understand why nVidia decided to REMOVE the support, because there are alot of games, such as AVPGOLD that dont work without 8-bit 3D.

I have always bought ATi Cards and always will do, as they generally respond to requests, and they seem to run slightly faster to me.

My previous GPU was an ATI 9800Pro, decided to try nVidia just to see, and for now, my next comp will be a ATI GPU and not a nVidia.

uninstall your video driver if your motherboard has integrated support

AVPGold works with the latest drivers - A user corrected an incompatibility in the game's main executable. The only problem was something very like this - The game cleared the Zbuffer before it should, and thus no frames were rendered. Sorry for going off on a tangent, but my point is this: After what I think was several months, Nvidia included the user's own fix in their drivers. They're that indifferent. Listen, the error in AVP was a complete lack of frames - Everything was just black. What is the symptom(s) in the games you mention? Because it might very well be the same problem.

The game is European Air War from MicroProse, the error is called
Error 7217
