I have a question...

There is the source code that has been leaked. There is the so-called "beta" that is available on the 'Net as well. It is often assumed that the "beta" is the compiled version of the source code that was stolen.

Is this the case? Do we know this definitively? Or is it just a reasonable assumption?

I thought I remembered reading that the person who released the "beta" was doing so since the source code was already out there.

Just wondering if anyone had conclusive evidence, etc, on this. Reasonably intelligent responses only, please. :)

Well, concidering that Valve has taken an active role in going into mIRC (where they distributed the "beta") and trying to stop all these people from sharing it, and the fact that the "beta" and the leak appeared around the same time, and that we're not allowed to post screenshots or any info about the "beta" on these forums, I'm pretty sure that that's the case.

I refrained from insulting you and telling you that you're dumb because I realize that some people are just misinformed.

hmm I'm afraid you're the one that's slightly misinformed. The beta was a seperate release. The source didn't contain any content whatsoever except for engine code. The beta as far as I understand it contains several maps, models etc. and the new hammer.

btw if this thread gets locked, I must express a disagreement with the policy of the moderators on this forum. There is absolutely nothing illegal about this thread and in no way does it even remotely damage VALVe.

SlaithEatery: I also hope you refrained from doing that because you're not an immature asstroll? That sig is longer than 4 lines btw, change it or lose it please bud

Twilight: I'm afraid the only answer you're going to get is that we just don't really know. A lot of what "Anonymous Leaker" said must have been untrue as he also stated that he was going to release a full version of the game (accusing that Valve were liars and were just delaying the game as a publicity stunt).

I think "leaked" is the wrong word as both were stolen.

The sorce code and the so called beta were stolen, but are two singular things which are available online. The code can be compiled, but it is JUST the code and doesn't contain any of the graphics or sounds or art work.

The so called beta does contain these things though. It appears as though the so called beta is a pre-e3 build and was downloaded as a whole and not compiled from the stolen source code.

Although I am not 100% sure as I have not downloaded either.

If I am reading the question right.

Chris_D, I figured there was a fair chance that we didn't know, but I wanted to check in case I had missed some good detective work of the forumites.

Someone, you're right, leaked is a poor choice of words. Stolen is much more accurate.

I didn't want to cause any controversy, or beat an already dead horse some more, but many people seem to be thinking that the stolen "beta" is all Valve has, and that the stolen code (Which they assume is the latest version) compiles into the "beta" (Which they also assume is the latest).

This just seems an extremely poor method of "determining" what Valve has and has not finished. But we already knew that I suppose... :)

Thanks for your earnest and helpful answers.

Its been so long since the leaking of the source code, does anyone belive that this person or persons that leaked the code will get caught?

I believe the guy/s have got away with it and believe hes helped the world by leaking the beta... boy i hate him/them!

Anyway what is released isnt worth much if u read the posts of the idiots who post about the beta, its full of bugs hardly works and i bet ya it will spoil some part of the story....

I dont beleive that the leaking of the code/beta has pushed the date back as some sites have written, the game is simply unfinshed...

And is it true that the leaker did release the patch that i heard about the next day or something? wouldnt that mean hes alot easier to catch?

Aparently enough was stolen that people were able to compile it into some form of maps and playable levels. By playable I mean incomplete, outdated, lacking objects/textures, and extremely buggy. And no, I don't know that by playing it, it's what I gather from whats been said here.
