I hope this game scares the hell out of me

Well i hope HL2 will scare the shit out of me..and make me say "shit there fater me what do i do?"
but i dobt it it will..But i know doom3 will

I expect more than being 'scared' in games. I want to feel 'how did I survive that last encounter/battle/event'.

I think the one thing games could do to make a game more 'scary' and immersive is have character developement (as in developing the character you're playing and other characters in the game). If you can feel for a character, it opens you up to what ever emotions the game designer wants you to feel. I can't think of a game that has truly done this yet.

I get scared way to easy. Ever have a friend over that never plays these types of games and he just runs full speed into hostile areas? Or he isnt looking the right way all the time, sad.... Meanwhile im hidding behind the chair. Its nuts.

my roommate from my first year of college was just like that. the bastard. heh EVERY SINGLE level on hl he just ran, killed maybe 1/2 (if that) the enemies in the game. he completely owned the xen levels too. lol the bastard.

I want to feel adrenaline and not really "fear"

so i hope that i see that monster coming for me... and i know that i am screwed if he gets me...

Ant lions will bring that to the game "if i throw this, they kill him... but it is my last one, they will run after me.."

i love/hate chase sequences

they are awesome but scary as hell

best example is the gargasaur. nothing comes close to having something that will kill you if you get to close and is faster than you.

the garg was only slightly faster than gordon so that when you were running through the parking lot, HE was slowly closing and if you slowed down for anything, you were dead

Next scariest thing were the assasin ladies, you knew they'd kill you in like 5 seconds cause they never miss so you had to sit in a corner with your shotgun out and listen for their tap tap tap noise. God. that was the hardest part of the game for me.

Me-* BAM* Haha i got one
Assasin ladies- *pop pop pop pop flip pop tap tap tap tap pop flip pop pop tap tap flip tap*
Me- *falls over dead from silenced pistol rounds*

I hope they use their 'scare' effects only as much as the game should have.... and above all don't count on it to make a good game (though I know it won't). I played Clive Barker's Undying for a while and I really enjoyed the scares it gave me at first... but the game (and gameplay) itself was so dry it didn't keep me playing and I still haven't finished it.
Lesson: scares can keep the game interesting but gameplay makes it worth playing.

Another game you might try somtime if you like getting the living shit scared out of you is Unreal. Not Unreal II. I had seen it at my friends house durring the day and it freaked me out a bit. Then I had it on my computer and was playing it at night.. the long hours of sweating..

Theif: The dark project, scared the daylife out of me. I couldnt even be in the same room as the computer until someone uninstalled it.

System Shock 2, scariest game ever. I couldn't play the Body of Many part for 2 days after i finally got there. Scared the bejesus outta me, i hope Doom 3 has stuff like that, actually i kinda don't because i'll totally flip out and destroy my computer

youre right, thief was scary. that was one of the only games to get me so involved into what i was doing. while hiding in a shadow and having a guard pass me, i would honestly be holding my breath, and if my friends were in the room, i would shush them, b/c i didnt want them to hear me. i think it was the quiet ambiant noises and music that they would play when you were just sitting there, alone, when it is completely dark and silent. im hoping the 3rd one can suck me in like that.

Hah... You quoted me Habibapotamus in your sig... That's bloody great!

The only thing that scared me in HL1 was when I first fell into the water with the big fish. I didn't see the scripted part where the scientist gets eaten the first time.

same for me
that fish is the only scary thing i saw
i mean, you are underwater, you can't go fast, you do little damage to it and that thing come very fast to you with big monster sound and big teeths and you can't escape :D

Stupid fish, stupid headcrabs jumping out at me, and stupid freakin' noises.

HL was damn scary :D

Now, I've been playing Morrowind and that is what I call a scary game :D It's so fun too!

The parts that always scared me real good in HL were when you were crawling through an air duct, and the moment you turned the corner a headcrab sprung on you. Was great.

System Shock 2, just basically creepy on a tonne of different levels, and packed with atmosphere throughout. I can remember that listening to the voice recordings of the dead crew, being one of the principal things that really freaked me out. From the alien autopsy that suddenly goes horribly wrong, to the often desperate logs of members trying to avoid detection by shodan and hoping to be rescued.

Edit: Yeah I hated the fish in Half-Life, they were just pain evil Sons of Bitches.

too right. that game is just as scary playing it today. I think the sound is a major factor. Oh and the ghosts D: You can even download a pack of high-poly models made by one of the artists working on the Arx Fatalis team. here

The Doom 3 Alpha certainly scared me, just so damn freaky. System Shock 2 was a pretty scary game too.

For me, no game has come close to being as creepy as Silent Hill. The school, hospital and sewer areas had me so shook I had to force myself to go through them.

When I was a kid with a PS1, I NEVER played that game for more than 15 minutes, and therefore never completed it, it was so f**king scary. The atmosphere, and the sfx used to scare the cr@p outta me!! LMAO

Haha, any of you guys ever play Carnivores? It's a pretty lame game where you hunt dinosaurs, but a couple of times, when a raptor snuck up on me... lets just say I almost needed a fresh pair of pants ;)

That was very startling but I have yet to play a game that acually scares me. I'm looking forward to seeing if I can get any chills and thrills outta hl2 :D

Half life 2 will kick some serious ass!! We all know it. And im not trying to start a debate or flame war here, but I think D3 will do an amazing job on scaring you shitless. Even the origional had you constantly aware in sections with no deamons, because you could here distant doors opening, growls from far off, and dismebered bodies all over the place. Kept you on edge always. HL had startling points, but wasnt really scary IMO. Would be good if HL2 adds alot more tension to the atmosphere :frog:

The only thing that scared thhe shit out of me in hl was when i was jumping down some water, then suddenly i turned around an saw a big "fish" attacking me...... that was scary!

ohh and the headcraps was only scary in the wents, otherwise were they just ****ing annoying!
